Thanks for the help guys. Priced some starters at NAPA $250-$400. I haven't priced the one's from the Stealer yet. Maybe I wont now that I know NAPA's are this much. Oh well.
mine was exactly the same i fitted a relay to the starter and not one problem since.previous owner changed the starter from a clacker type to a solanoid type and you get a voltage drop when cranking without the relay
I've been having a similar problem on an '02 7.3L. I turn the key and instruments come alive but the truck won't crank, Im not hearing a click though. Thwe batteries checked good with a voltmeter. Could you explain a little more about "jumping" from the posts with a screwdriver to bypass the solenoid. I just put a Napa starter in 6 weeks ago that had the solenoid attached. I currently have the starter out and I'm on my way back to Napa to have them bench test the starter. If they say it's good what's next?
If the starter is good then check the coil on the passenger side fender or fire wall. That could be going bad. If it is bad go with OEM parts on this TRUST me you dont want the headache I have been having. I went with a coil from the local auto parts store and all 3 were defective.
To jump from the post you turn the key wait for the wait to start light to extinguish go to the starting coil on the fender or fire wall disconnect the small wire from its post and lay a screwdriver across the 2 brass posts. If it makes a click then starts like mine is doing then the starter is going bad and NTB replaced.

WELCOME TO FTE
Travis, is this what you meant to say? If jumping the solenoid allows the starter to spin and start the engine, then that points to a good starter and bad solenoid. If jumping the post only gets you a click, the the starter has problems. Right???
Just got back and the starter and solenoid are fine, what now? Batteries, Fuses, relays and fusible links all check good. I've heard talk of a "relay". Not sure where to go from here.
Travis , i had the same problem and i got starter from flebay, for 140 and it was reduced gear High TQ starter, it Manhandles the PSD ,,,check them out,
ill see if i can find the link
here it is,

Yes that is what I meant to say. I unfortunatly had both problems, and it was back to back. When I jumped the truck after installing the first solenoid it started up. Bad solenoid. Replaced the solenoid with a new one jumped the posts again same thing. replaced it with one from Ford and click then it started. My dang starter was going crapping out. Replaced the starter and everything is good now.
Pete thanks for the link I have it saved in my favs on ebay. I saw that these were for 2000-2001 I wonder if they have them for the 99'. I will wait until the one I have craps out. 2 year warranty from NAPA not bad but expensive. $300.00 without the core charge.
its 94-03 so im sure it would fit your truck,
and the story on this one is, when i changed injectors, it looked like i can crank it for 2 min, i did like 30 , 45, sec cranks and dang starter was not worm !!!!!
well im glad you got your truck fixed, to bad i didnt post before in this thread, you could of save 140$ ,,,,sorry Travis,
No worries. Thanks again for the link it will come in handy. That starter is a monster. Did anyone else have a hard time installing the 3rd bolt on the top of the starter, the one that is right next to the solenoid. That one took me the longest to loosen and tighten. Who designed these things anyways?
