Heya guys, quick question. Can I use an auto tranny radiator in place of a manual tranny radiator. The reason I ask is it gets mighty hot down here in Texas...and there is a radiator available with "HD cooling", but listed for the auto. I think it would provide better cooling capacity than the regular manual tranny one.
Opinions on Proliance radiators?
Going with another Motorcraft 190* thermostat...my fifth one...x $22 each... $110 total in thermostats...
Well you know as well as I do that it'll fit. It MAY have a larger capacity is all. But what may make it the "HD" is that it has the provisions for a tranny cooler. That'd be my only guess aside from being larger.
Well I went ahead and ordered it. I guess I'll see Monday what the true differences are, though I'm thinking that you're right Vince and it's just "HD" because it has the tranny cooler (big whoop...). We shall see.
Yes it should fit. You'll notice it has fittings for your transmission cooler lines, which you obviously won't have (due to having a manual). Make sure you plug off the holes to the cooler, just to make sure stuff doesn't get trapped in there (rainwater, etc)..
You might notice that when it comes in Vince, that it's a three core rad and thicker is all. Instead of plugging the inlet and outlet, you could use it to heat water for coffee, hee hee
Yeah Zach, just plug off the fittings for the auto tranny coolant lines, if that doesn't keep your engine cool enough, go with an external oil cooler. An oil cooler can reduce engine heat by as much as 30 degree's. I put one on my focus and it works great, the focus is my race car and the 4 banger dohc can turn 7000 rpms all day, but it does build up heat after running the dog water out of it, the oil cooler helps alot, keeps the engine crisp. You sure don't want to over heat an aluminum engine. I may put one on the ranger as well, when crawling a round in the mountains all day in low range, it tends to get a little hot, not over heat, but hot. I found that the cooler you keep the engine, the crisper the throttle response, when the motors get hot, they tend to get lazy, I'm sure you know what I mean, thier not as peppy when thier hot. I used water wetter on my atv, it worked well, never tried it in an auto. I thought about a low temp thermostate in the ranger, but I heard it's part of the emissions equipment and needs to be at 195 to burn the fuel off properly or something to that effect. It may not be as much of an issue with your 94 as it's pre-OBD II.
yes it will fit and work, im runnin an auto-matic radiator in my truck because it was $15 cheaper than the manual version. just plug the ports off where tranny lines would have hooked up.
The new radiator I got from Autozone ( Hey it was made almost in North America), had one heck of a thick core on it. I think it was over an 1" thick. The stock one I removed, the core was only a mere 1/2" thick. IIRC I paid a whopping $118 for it. Lifetime warranty. Been serving me great for 2 months now.
Dang. Well It'll be here tommorow. When I do the install I'll get pics for you guys of course.
As a positive side note, the head gasket that leaked Saturday coming home from the NE Texas get together hasn't leaked a drop since then (woot). Hopefully between the new radiator and another thermostat, I can keep from overheating anymore.
i got mine on a discount. the guy on the phone was like yeah that will be 130 bucks. i was like now thats just crazy. i can buy a 5.0L radiator for 90 bucks but one for a lil v6 is 130, what gives? he said well ill tell you what, if you get it b4 my shift ends ill take 15% off.. i said deal. i was there in less than 5 min. he said damn that was fast where you in the parking lot lol. (i wasnt quite there. 2 blocks up at taco place lol)
