The latch on my 1990's center console just broke today. I took it off and one of the little metal parts inside is cracked, so there is no repairing it. Does anybody know if these are still available from Ford? I am going to try and get down to the dealer to see. I can try the boneyards too. If you buy a new one, I am asuming the key cylinder does not come with it and you would use your old one. Has anybody replaced one of these before?
To answer my own question, I ordered a new latch from the dealer for $15. Sounds reasonable to me. You have to put your old key cylinder in it. On the receipt for my order, it says that I ordered a "cat #####." I guess that stands for "catalogue assembly" or something but I still thinks it's pretty funny.
I thinks it's pretty funny too. I can see someone walking into the parts dept and saying "Hey I ordered a lock for my console and you send me a cats a#$!"
Folks, I too have a '90. I was once told the glove box latches from '80-86 trucks would work, but was not able to confirm it until yesterday. YES, they work. I pulled a glove box latch from an '80-86 truck/Bronco and it drops right into my center console. The replacement did not have a lock and I didn't bother trying to transer it over because I lost my key and never lock my center console anyway. I paid $5, which is actually steep. I bet if you go to a u-pull-it you could get several for $5 total.
True, true...but the junkyards around here never have anything for my Bronco, even from pickups too. I had to order a pdl actuator and mirror head from a junkyard in Texas. I think the guys at the yards here are just lazy and won't look for me. I guess they don't like money! The guy at one yard told me he had no pdl actuators, and I saw F150's back there and a pdl actuator from any one of them would work. Oh well, I got my parts. Anyway, as far as the latch, the one on my 90 broke, who's to say another used on wouldn't break too. At least I am getting a new one. And a cat a$$ too.
Got my "cat a$$" today. It was a little tough getting the old lock cylinder out of the old one, I ended up cutting it out. Otherwise it's as good as new.
