I'm trying to replace the latch on my "90 F150 an I took it to the local dealer to price it. They told me that I was looking at $50 to replace it and the catch part together. Is that too much? Does anyone know where I could get it for cheaper???? Dont a have a junkyard near by or I'd have gone there first!~
The center console latch on my 1989 Bronco is EXACTLY the same as the one from the glove box of my 1990 Cherokee.
How do I know, I thought you'd never ask.
I just replaced the one in my Jeep a few weeks ago from a junker. The next day, I was crawling around inside my console looking for a CD and stopped for a second to look up at the latch - from the bottom it looked like the same thing - so naturally, I took them both out and laid them on the table for a closer inspection. It's uncanny - even the grain on the front part of the clip is the same.
Now for the good news, it's not too difficult to take those things apart and swap out the key cylinder.
Moral of the story, I've had too much coffee this morning, and if you need a new console latch, find a junked early 90s Cherokee. The bone yards are full of them.
