Ok, Heres the deal I have a 91 f-150 with the 6 banger that is 5 speed stick, also I have a 89 F150 with a V8 (5.0l) auto I would love to keep the stick and also use the V8. Is this marriage possible or are the bell housings different.
I am suspecting that it won't fit but asking anyways.
89 to 96 are pretty much the same trucks........grouped for many parts and add-ons in that range. Even the Haynes is.
I'm sure there were 91, 5.0's with a 5-speed behind them too. My guess is worst case you'll need an adapter to bolt it up because of the difference in trannys. I haven't done it but I'll bet others here have and will be able to answer you positively
if you aren't done yet you'll run into a few other things. the radiators are different but with you having both trucks sitting there that makes it so much easier. good luck. i done my 300 to 302 swap and i'm very happy with it!
I am glad to hear that the swap will be fairly easy, but Andym, why do you think I wouldnt be happy ist it the gear ratios, Or something else, You feedback is great.
i'll be honest man. i will have to agree that i wasn't happy at first cause i couldn't really tell the power difference but after a bottle of cfoam in the tank and a bottle down the intake and some exhaust work it was well worth my money...... no the 302 doesn't have the same tourque where you can lug the motor down low but hell give it more gas.... that's my theory.... and specially if you put some lower gears in it. i got a 3.50's with 35 inch tires and it's a little doggy but for a stock 302 and those gears and tires i think it does pretty good really. i do have a set 4.56s to make it more of a trail crawler though cause with a 5 speed and the huge tires it's really high geared.
because the 300 six is a better engine in these trucks.
that's all in a personal prefrence. i liked it but i like my 302 better and if it goes i'm going to go 351 or 460 the next time cause i got ***** and they tell me bigger is always better!
The I300 is a large bore, large rod inline six. By design it produces most of it's torque at lower RPMs.
The 302 produces most of it's power in the mid RPM range.
Since trucks are heavy, and the gearing is what it is, generally you want the engine to make it's peak torque much lower than you would in a lighter car.
Of course one can change the gearing and rev the snot out of the 302 to accomplish the same thing, however you're wasting gasoline to do so.
A little bit of devil's advocate for the 302 bias here. The 300 I6 is a wonderful, pull till she dies up to about 70-80 kms. Unfortunately, since it was deemed by the aftermarket as not a decent hot rod motor, the amount of aftermarket for this motor is like a drop in the ocean. The 302, as well as the other windsor based motors, have a huge amount of aftermarket parts and accessories to taylor the 302 to a more variety of vehicles. There is still no replacement for displacement, and longer stroke is a major factor in torque output, and the 302 will never win any tractor pull contests in a full size rig without extreme gearing when compared to larger engines, but with the right mods it can out perform a 300 I6. Its all just a matter of how much you want to spend.
