Since the Mustang had a 302 / C6 or AOD or 5 speed and 8.8 and MANY poeple modify their Mustangs there are MANY aftermarket parts available for that drivetrain combo. Where as for the 300 there isn't much if anything out there. That alone is a good reason to go with a 302. Plus the 302 gets the job done just fine in these trucks.
There's plenty of aftermarket support for 300's - you can get intakes, cams, pistons, whatever you want. You just have to be willing to look for it a little harder.
I'll trade you two 302's for one 300 - any day of the week.

Really? What ever I want? Show me.
I have never really looked that hard since I have never owned a 300, but no manufacturer I have ever bought from seems to have anything even listed for the 300. MSD, March Pullies, Ford Perfromance, Trick Flow, Bassani, Stainless Works, Edelbrock, Holly etc. etc. etc.
There may be some hole in the wall outfit out there, but when you deal with those kind of places you never know what you are getting.
i have a 1990 f250 4x4. the original 351w blew up so i put a 4.9 down it
because i had one here with low miles in it. The truck doesnt have the power
the 351 had but i have no regrets. The six works good and pulls the truck just
fine . To make a long story short i wouldnt consider going back to the 302 or 351.
i own both a 96 f150 with the 300 5spd and a 91 f150 with a 302 AT both 2wd and i believe my 300 outpulls the 302 any day becuase the 302 will pull it it just has to kick down and scream some rpms. but in a race the 302 will spank the 300. it all depends what your looking for a torque monster that will pull well or a cool sounding V8 that is faster than the 300 but sucks more fuel.
