Am I the only person in the world who cannot get the oil filter off the 2007 F-150 ?
Did my first oil change yesterday. I have ALWAYS changed my own oil on my trucks & SUVs. My f250 was easy. My Expedition was easy. Who the hell put the F-150 filter at its present location AND angle. I think part of the problem was the initial install. I don't think they oiled the gasket before installation. I had to take on the handy dandy oil slide just to get enough room to put a funky oil wrench on there. I had every clamp, wrench, socket and sand paper etc on that filter to get it off.
Finally I got it off. It's different in design to the 8205s or whatever the recommended filter is. It doesn't have the smaller grooves on the end that might have worked with my cap type wrench.
OK, OK I'm cooling down now. It's not like I have never changed oil before. The darn thing just wouldn't budge. I am hoping that the new filter correctly installed will come off a lot easier than this one. Otherwise I'll pay someone to do this truck.
Let me know if you had the same trouble with your ORIGINAL filter and if problems persist on filters you have installed. What do you guys use to get your filters off ? Did you access the filter from below ? (Front?)
probably was due to the fact your filter wasn't lubed. the initial filter is a beotch to get off. it should be easier in the future if you lubed it up b4 you installed the new one.
It's only the original filter. Everyone on here who did their own first oil change on these trucks has had this issue. It's a real bugger to get loose!
I've got 2500 miles on my screw so I haven't attempted an oil change yet. However, I just assumed it would be the same filter/location that's on my '06 Expedition. It is a bit of a problem, the fan shield and coolant hose are somewhat in the way. I use a band oil wrench to turn the filter what seems like a millimeter at a time. I've considered getting an oil filter relocation kit for both cars.
I hope I don't encounter the probs you did.
Man, you shoulda read past threads on this. I am SOOOO glad I did. Because you and everyone else are right on, that filter is hard to get to and on WAYYY too tight.
BRIDGE, here's what I did... I took my filterwrench (the one that fits the new motorcraft filter) with an 8" extension, and tapped it onto the base of the factory filter on the block. Then with the socket it came loose no problems. I believe I read that suggestion on here somewhere and it worked perfectly, I almost had to look around for the candid camera. However, had I not seen the warnings here first, I would have had the same post as you did. Glad you got it finally.
That first oil change is a "complete BEAR". I would like to kick the robots butt for putting it on so tight. I did my first one a couple weeks ago and I found it easier to remove the air intake and get it from the top with a strap or band wrench by turning it a little at a time.
Mine was the same and after the first one its not that bad. Make sure you save the reciepts for the oil and the filter and mark the mileage you did the oil change. You also need to use a motorcraft filter and Ford approved oil. A non approved filter or oil will void the warranty. A dealer is telling me right now I have no warranty on my engine because I didn't save the reciepts.
That dealer is full of crap. You do not have to use Fords filter or oil. It's ILLEAGL for them to tell you that. If you can get it in writing from the dealership report it to your states attorney general.
I already did the one on my truck and my expedition. I had better luck from the top, just removed the air intake plastic housing, and I used a plumbers chain wrench from the top. It bent the heck out of the old filter, but it did come off, little by little with minimal problems. that is not the best location for it, but oh well, I'm hoping my second oil change is easier being that I did lube the seal.
I guess the ford dealers are desperate for service business. I got a expedition last year and a new f 150 from two different dealers, and they both made it sound like you have to save your receipts if you do your own oil, but I later read somewhere in the manual under warranty I think, that Ford cannot refuse warranty service no matter what. I have legal insurance, so if it ever comes to that, then I'll have one of the nifty attorneys write them a friendly letter or give them a nice phone call to set them straight.
I think some dealerships just like trying to scare their customers into getting all service done at the dealership. I've had four Fords since 2001 and my dealer has never mentioned keeping receipts for home maintenance. I do use the MyFord website to keep track of oil changes and it has an option to select "home repair/maintenance" for every service entry. If it really had any warranty implications I doubt they'd offer that option. Also, when I do have service performed at the dealer it shows up in the MyFord service log automatically. So if I can see their entries I'll bet they can see mine.
I went to the dealer and I have a noise in my engine that I wanted them to look at. They said that the noise isn't l"oud enough for them to service", "without receipts Ford Motors Corp will refuse any engine repair". I said basically I have no warranty on my engine without receipts? they said "yes". Then he went on to say I should have already flushed my coolant and have the fuel injectors cleaned every 15000 miles. Ford maintenance schedule says my coolant should last 100,000 and no mention of having the injectors cleaned. I am currently in the process of contacting ford about this and I am not going to stop until I get them to check my engine properly and tell me where the noise is coming from. Sorry for hijacking the thread but I want you guys to know about my oil change problem.
Yup, complain to Ford and find a new dealer to service your truck. The coolant is a 100K item even under severe service. If your service guy is saying otherwise maybe a talk with his supervisor will set him straight.
