Ford 8.8 Rear Differential

I can't seem to find a drain plug. Assuming I have to take off the cover to drain do I need a new gasket when re-assembling.

Any other tricks that anyone can think of? I already have the friction modifier to add because it is a limited-slip differential.

Any recommendation on the type of fluid/oil to fill it with? The Haynes manual calls for Hypoid gear lubricant. What is that?

Thanks in advance!

That's because there is no drain plug on these dam# differentials, front or rear. You have to pull the cover. Many people reuse the gasket here if it comes off nicely, since the oil is so thick. The front is another story. Take a look at it. Where is the plug? Where are the cover bolts? Whose stupid idea was it not to put drain plugs on these things? Easiest way is to go to Jiffy Lube where they have a pump and can pump the oil out. That's what I did for my front. Cost 20 bucks with the oil and took 10 minutes. Best 20 bucks I ever spent. Not counting that time when I was 15 and went to that place with the red light and...oops that's another story. But anyway I would have had them do the rear if I had thought of it first. They said the pump does not fit into some differentials, but it worked great on the front. As far as hypoid gear oil, most of it is and it will say it on the container.

I changed mine recently. There is no gasket for the 8.8 you have to use silicon sealant. Your manual should show you how to apply it, basically outside the bolt holes. Also, the diff will accept more oil than the specified fill amount. So make sure you only put in what is called for in your owners manual, they say overfilling will cause foaming. In hindsight, unless you want to inspect your diff, I'd use a suction pump to remove the old oil, or take it to jiffy lube like the previous guy said, so you don't have to mess with the seal. Good luck, Ben

The guy at the transmission shop where my Bronco is waiting for its rebuilt driveshaft told me that you can drain the front diff by removing the bottom bolt on the front of the diff. He said to use some silicone or something on the threads when putting the bolt back in. I haven't tried this myself since mine was just changed with the pump. Might be worth a try, though.
