For Ford it's the 302 HO V8, 390 V8 and the 429 V8, For GM it's the 350 V8, 396 V8 and the 427 V8, for Chrysler it's the 383 V8, 426 V8 and the 440 V8.

For me the all-time favorite is actually the Hudson Twin H Power 308ci straight six. With 7X tuning (that is, a NASCAR-spec build), it kicks out about 200+hp and about 300tq; Engine Analyzer tells me my build would come out to about 220hp and 307lb-ft. It's what I want to put on a hot rod when I build one and is a well-engineered engine that's highly underappreciated and hence very unique when seen.

Close behind are the Flathead Ford, the 303 Rocket Olds, 368ci Lincoln V12, 292 GMC I6, EArly 354 and 392ci Hemis and the Ford Y-blocks. Any of these would go great on a hot rod.

Other GM's I also like the 331/365/390 Cadillac, the SBC, the Cad V16, and Cad V12.

Mopar I like the 340 small block, the 360 (mostly because I drive one now), and of course the 440-6.

Other Ford engines I like are the 302, and both the 351W and C.

Ford - The tiny 60hp flat head V8, powered many a midget racer.
GM - Olds V8 I had in my '50 Chebby coupe.
Dodge/Plymouth - That indestructible slant 6.

To each their own - My favorite is a 390 Cobra. I've got a 360 that I want to "convert" in my 250SC. 2d choice is the 1.6L in a Geo Tracker LSi 4x4.

460 an the 300 six. Hands down the best Ford engines off all time. If your in to mud bogging an truck pulling the 460 is by far the most popular motor. Tons off torque down low an really tough like the 300 six.

I like the early small block Chevy engines- 265,283, and the 327. Easy to work on, makes lots of power with very little mods, cheap, cheap, and cheap to hot rod and near bulletproof. Of the Ford engines make mine a 429. Dodge would be the little bad 340. I helped build and install a 340 six pack into a 1 ton Ddoge van with 4.56 gears and a 727B transmission. It would do a wheelie if you did it just right. And the entire thing looked like a piece of junk from the outside- inside was extremely plush but it wasn't mine. There are lots of good old engines out there but the absolute best engines ever made are the new Tritons. They put out major HP by comparison to yesterdays engines, last well over 150,000 miles and have very few breakdowns. Someday, someone will say their favorite engine WAS the old Triton engine. Amazing how it goes.

My all time favorite is the Dobel steam car engine. 0 to 75 in 7 seconds in a 1925 2-ton car. Ready to run in less than 30 seconds on a winter day. Jay Leno's Dobel passed the California emissions test. Great mileage on kerosene.

351C, Cosworth DFV, and my personal favorite, still from the Ford empire - the Quad Rotor engine fitted to the Le Mans 787B....
