I'd like to build a mid 80s D150 short bed with a magnum 360.The 360 builds good hp & those yr Dodge trucks are fairly light. Plus I like the bodystyle.I owned a 84,90 & a 92 Dodge 1/2 tons. The 92 was the best truck I've ever owned. My first choice would be 92 to 94 Dakota with a V8. Those are getting scarce.
I miss my 92 5.2 Magnum ext cab Dakota really bad, can't find one that's not ragged out, unless you can pry it from an elderly person, seen quite a few of them out driving one, no sale either.
My sister had a dodge dart with the slant 6. She drove it when she wassgoing to college. She was driving 50 miles one way 5 days a wk. That old motor never missed a beat & it got great MPG. The slant six was a great little motor
man how did one mopar muscle lovin jerk just hijack a ford forum, and get everyone else singing the praises of ma mopars engines. i had a slant six in my duster, that was a dog but it was one of the most enjoyable little cars i ever drove. it was just fun, ran great, 22mpg, get a piece of the rock reliable. as for the 318, people will just give those to you, if you ask. the one in my 5th ave driver runs like a top, perfectly colored spark plugs, 20 mpg, but leaks oil out of every gasket. dont know if it will get another 318 or a 360 when it finally quits. easy to make 380-400 horse w/a 318. Dan
I've owned 3 D150s with 318s in them. All 3 were great trucks. The only reason I have a F150 now was the finance guy at Graceland Dodge made me mad. I had chosen a Dodge 1500 over my F150 until he ruined the deal. I get good service out of both brands. My last Dodge was a 92 model. It was bulletproof. It gave me the best service of any truck I've ever owned. It had 285,000 miles on it when I sold it in 99. I see it all the time. Its still running on the origional 318.
I'm on a mission to get a 350 GM pumped up, would love to swap it out with a late model LT-1, but pulling one from a van is a beech, may look into swapping the 85's heads with the later vortec and then get a used aftermarket intake and new cam. GM is low buck builds, loved the LT-1 that was in our Caprice, was a hard driven cop car, to a detective car, must have been a hell of an item, they usually retire them at 55,000 miles, this one was held onto for 100,000 and we took it to 178,000before selling it.
We rebuilt the 351 modified in our F-150, valve adjustment in Fords is so much easier, torque to 15 or 25 ft lbs and your done, nothing complicated like the GM's. I just wish the parts were as reasonable, you can build a far more powerful SBC than a SBF for the same budget. I've abused engines on both sides, they are equal in strength and weakness, I'm not really a die hard in any brand, but I love the 70's Ford trucks, and in that time period, the sheetmetal between Ford and Chevy were not equal, when put in the same conditions, a GM would rot away.
Hey Wolfie,
If you get a chance, stop and ask if that old VW transporter is for sale and how much. My oldest daughter got a "BUG" (sorry) and wants a transporter to fix up.
