Well I check the timing on my 96 F150, 300 I 6, 5 Spd, today, and it was at 17 degree's advanced. This is with the spout connector unplugged, and checking it with the timing marks on the drivers side. I left it alone, as I couldn't remember what it was supposed to be set at. Then I do a search on hear, and read that there are timing marks on the passanger side.
What side do I use, and what is the base timing suppose to be????
If it is advanced too much, would that hurt my gas millage?? I currently get between 12 and 13. The truck has 2.73 rear gear, and I try to keep it below 2,000 rmps. I have also just done a full tune up.
I had my boss check on Aldata Friday, and it said to set it at 10' btdc, and use the timing marks on the driver side. I looked on the passanger side, and there are no timing marks, just what appears to be a small bar with a point on the end of it. I will check it on the passanger side to see what is showing there, but I am going to guess that it is going to be way way off there. The truck runs too smoothly to be off that much, so we will see what happends.
There are timing marks on the passenger side . I learned the hard way when I put my engine back in my truck and left the pointer off the crank shaft housing. used the marks on the drivers side and timed it wrong. If you can not see the marks lay down under your raidator look just above where the bottom hose connect to the engine and you should see a pointer.
Up to a certain year around 94-95 the marks are on a plate on the passengers side of the engine (bolted to the timing cover)and there is a THIN SCRIBED LINE on the damper. The timing is 10 degrees B.T.C.. From what I have read, on the later engines there are timing marks on the damper and just a pointer on the engine, just the reverse of the above. But it still works (times) the same way. The cast marks appear to be a holdover from some earlier year.
Well I got the timing light out yesterday, and changed the timing to 10' btdc.
I used the marks on the timing cover on the drivers side, per ALDATA, and the truck runs perfect. Will have to drive for a while and see if this helps my fuel mileage.
crew , I hope you got your timing correct for your year model , but I have taken my cover off of my 1982 4.9 and when the crank and cam marks are correct with the dots lined up the timing mark is the one on the passenger side ,maybe not true for all models.
Hey all, well its been 4 days and 100 miles or so since I changed the timing, and it is still running with no major problems. The only things that I have noticed ore that the gas gauge looks like it is moving alot slower ( better mpg I hope ), and that now it does not like a head wind ( not that it did before either, but has less power in 5th gear). Oh well, if the lack of power is a trade off for better mpg, I can deal with it, I guess.
You might want to look up the correct timing procedure and ignore what Aldata says. The Ford 300 has timing marks on the passengers side. The cast marks on the timing cover are on all Ford 300s, that is the way the cover is made, it cost money to make a new casting dies. The engine will run if you use the drivers side marks but will be running RETARDED. Go to ford and ask if you have to. Most of the manuals show the timing plate on the passengers side of the cover. Take a close look at your damper (you may have to clean it) and see if there are timing marks ( 0-10 ) scribed on the damper. If there are marks "the small bar with a point on the end of it " on the passengers side is your pointer and the damper marks are the timing marks. The worst it can do is not run . The other thing you can do is --put number one cyl on TDC of the firing stroke ( you will have to look into the spark plug hole to see the valves) -- ignore the rotor position and see which timing marks line up -- the drivers side or the passengers side.
