Front calipers
I got a 72 F250 2x4 with front duel piston calipers.
I'm getting ready to put it back on the road. Was last on the road in 2000.
I was looking into getting new calipers (local $95 each loaded - catalouge about $100 for pair loaded but 4-6 weeks out).
Money is tight as it always is and I was wondering if there is a way to test these calipers. I got them off fine and the brakes had no problems in 2000. The rubber boots don't look ripped. Right now the truck does not run and I will doing a heart transplant in it soon(when I get some help).
Thank you
I've found two styles of them, one where the
piston seals are around the piston like piston rings
in the motor and I believe later ones where the seals
are stationary in a groove and piston slides by.
I recall you can buy seal kits provided the bore is not pitted
on old style (good luuck) or the anodized piston has not worn thru the anodize
resulting in a pitted mess (80% found as pitted).
At one time after making a piston extraction tool I was pulling pistons
out at Pick-N-Pull's looking for a good set of pistons.
If you place the caliber in a vise, adding air and opening vise you can get both pistons to extend out enough to remove by hand then decide if resealable. This is all new to me as i'm still collecting parts for a drum conversion on the 68.
