Just checked my radiator fluid and it looked black. I assume this is engine oil. If so, how is it getting in the radiator? Any suggestions? How big a problem is it?
1988 F350 7.3 diesel 5spd Banks turbo.
I would consider this a big problem. Is coolant getting into the oil? Coolant breaks down oil quickly.
The only ways that I know of for oil and coolant to mix are head gasket leaks and timing cover gasket leaks. Other than that there are things like cracked head/block etc. but not that common.
And coolant/oil mixtures as I have seen them look more like chocolate milk than black, but thats all subjective.
No, the Banks doesn't have a separate cooler. The Banks was installed several years ago. I did change the water pump myself about a year ago. However, I checked things pretty carefully for several months thereafter. There's lots of oil all over the front of the engine so gaskets sounds possible.
