If I choose not to use the factory crossrails on my rooftop rack (they rub the paint as you probably know), what's the best thing to replace them with? Does anybody make anything that will fit right in the Ford side tracks? I want some brackets that raise the cross rails about an inch or so above the painted rooftop.
Let me look around.. I once read a posting here or elsewhere from a guy who figured out how to correct the cross bar issue and lift them up a bit. I''ll dig around to see if I can find it.. I took mine off too and put them back on only when using the rack, which is very rare..
I read a post last year that Expedition(?) crossbars will fit. Saw a photo where the track is similar but the crossbars arch up 3-4 inches above the roof. Anyone remember a post like this?
And FWIW, if you don't want to make those you can go to Wal-Mart and get some Industrial-Strength, self-adhesive Velcro. Put the soft side on the crossbar where it meets the paint. This worked for me the 1 time I used the rack on a trip down the East Coast.
Took mine off the same week it was bought. When I lived at the hobby farm I'd see an Excursion every once in a while that had three ladder racks on it which looked pretty good. Not sure what brand it was but it sure would work nice to haul ladders.
How much weight can the X carry on the roof? Manufacturer Recommended and then actual weight based on experience? Thanks.
Have you never seen the advertisement when the Mini-Cooper was reintroduced? Photos of it sitting atop an X. But I believe the rack system is rated at 200# by FoMoCo.
