Is there a way to tell by the VIN# If this Excursion I'm looking at is a 4x4 or 4x2. The ad states that its a 2WD limited but the pics show locking hubs on the front wheels and a selector switch on the dash just to the right of the steering column below the shifter.
Is it an internet ad or a local one? Is there a link to pictures? If it's a 2wd then it would have enclosed front hubcaps and no selector switch. Unless the 4wd is now inoperable and they are pushing it as a 2wd. ha ha
Dealership, I can clearly see the hubs on the front and the selector switch in the dash. Its an 03 limited 6.0L with 86000 mi for $22k. Not a bad deal if it is 4x4. I called them and they are checking into it.
If you really want that truck, I would go in personally to the dealership and insist (politely and firmly) on seeing the sales manager, bring the ad with you...
If they know you are a serious buyer, I would be amazed if you didnt get the original price.. Carrying inventory doesnt help their cash flow. A sure sale will make them ALOT more flexible. You shouldn't have to fight hard when they know you will either buy or walk out depending on their answer..
A few other thoughts from a guy who has learned his lessons the hard way... you probably already know these things...
If youre getting a loan, obtain a committment amt. and rate from your own bank... Dealers usually get kick-backs in the rates they quote you.. For example, they offer to help you finance, and come back with a 10.8% loan rate and tell you its the best you can get with your credit score. (makes u feel a bit embarrassed and often people dont challenge it) In reality they have the loan at 9.8% and take the 1.0% balance back from the bank as a kind of commision. Often, they might reduce the selling price and bump up the interest rate to cover the reduction (and more). You never realize this is happening.. Its why the salesman gets you to tell him if your getting a loan or paying cash before giving you a final selling price.
Also dont talk trade in values (if applicable) until you have their best/final price on the new purchase.... Trade in haggling is usually smoke and mirrors when they are making enough on the new car purchase/loan to offset what seems like a generous trade in amount..
Thanks for the advise. I called them and they are willing to let it go for that price. They had to go out into the lot and confirm that it is in fact a 4x4. They obviously thought it was a 2wd. I will see my bank tomorrow. Carfax came back clean 1 owner. It would be nice if I can get an oasis soon from someone here. VIN 1FMNU42P23EC08251 Thanks again for the advise and thanks in advance for the oasis.
Got a call this morning from Jerry @ Don McGill Toyota of Katy and he said, "I took the truck over to Ford this morning and even though there is a selector switch for 4wd there is nothing underneath to make a 4wd. No transfer case."
""DEE-DA-DEE"" I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE! So the deal is off. If anyone lives in Katy, TX. I wish they could take a look at it just to satisfy my curiosity.
Whyw ould it have a switch then? I am even confused on that one. I cannot imagine they would put a switch n a 2wd hoping someone would change it to 4wd. Maybe get someone to check itout for you.
