Gas tanks---Again

I have searched this to death and I am ready to pull out whats left of my hair!
I am ready for a tank in my 53, and want to have it in the frame. I have searched gastanks.com, I think every one they have, and am more confused than when I started.
I like the setup tacson has in his truck, but when I measure my opening, the tank he used won't fit without moving the rear crossmember. And from his pictures, the crossmember looks to be in line with the springs, i.e. factory location.
I found a Jeep Comanche tank that should fit in the hole that is there, but the sending unit costs $145, tank is $153 and its just 18 gallons.
The ideal situation for me would be 18-20 gallons, tank, sender, straps, etc for $200 or less.
Any suggestions, or should I bite the bullet and move that crossmember. I don't want to move it because I would like to retain the stock bumper mounts and install a hitch at some point.

Digger,

I take it you have read all the threads on tank installations and have seen the various tanks? I.E. Randy Jack's full sized Bronco tank install, my full sized GM Blazer tank install, John Niolon;s Mustang tank install, and the rest.

If you use the Mustang/Falcon tank and hang it from the lower frame rail then you could keep the cross member in the factory location. Maybe with it mounted from teh lower frame rail it woudl give you some room to do something with the filler neck instead of having to have it come through the bed floor.

Good luck
Bobby

Talking

Thanks Bobby-

I have read all of them to the point where I could almost recite them! I guess I need to put my hands on one of these tanks. I am assuming that the meausements listed on gastanks.com are to the outer edge of the flange, but I would like to know what the actual tank measurement is. I think I want a (gasp!) Chevy tank, so I can use their sender. It seems there are more gauge choices out there going that route.

I never thought I would utter the words "I think I want a Chevy ANYTHING"!

On my install, the rear crossmember is moved, but only one set of holes. The crossmember went from sharing the forward set of holes to the aft set of the attach holes for the spring hanger. I also flipped the crossmember upside down. The Bronco tank fits perfect in that space.

I forget what the sender cost, but nobody had a 25 gallon sender, so i had to modify the 33 gallon sender to make it shorter. Bronco Graveyard said they were going to offer the 25 gallon sender "soon".

Digger,

LOL, I understand. The full sized Blazer tank that I used comes in 2 sizes; 24 and 31 gallon. I ended up with the 31 gallon (it was a freebie) thats why I chose to mount it up between the frame rails, I wanted as much clearance as I could get. The 24 gallon is a few inches shorter so it might be able to be mounted under the frame. I don't recall the actuall outside diameter of the Blazer tank, I can measure it tonight if you like. I know that it fits (even teh flange) in between the frame rails and its basically square in shape. The fuel filler neck is located on the top of the tank and is directed towards the passenger side. The fuel sending unit is basically in the center of the tank.

The Mustang/falcon tank has a flange around the upper edge of the tank that is the mounting point for it, If I remember right the flange will set on frame (at least it did on my 49) The top of the Mustang/Falcon tanks actually doubled as the trunk floor in their original applications.

I think I may go the Bronco route. Checked out Bronco Graveyard and their tank was less than gastanks.com by about $30. Looks like I can hit my goal of under $200 with the 25.5 gallon and the sending unit.

That should give me any easy 300 miles to cruise with about 6 gallon left in the tank.

Thanks guys. This site is AWESOME!

Got a Mustang Restoration place in your area? Gas tanks are pretty much the same 1965/73, and the senders are 60 bucks. Replacement parts can be bought for them like the float and filter screen. Cost is peanuts. There are other tanks used by Ford in the 1960's that have a larger capacity and a rear filler: dearbornclassics.com .. Catalog: page 164.

Padding your post count with "woo-hoo's"?......... Can we get a mod. to set digger back to "1"?

I keep waffling back and forth between moving the tank in my '56 and leaving it in the cab. I keep thinking, if I got to a fram mount tank, I'm opening up a whole new "cash hole" that I dont really need.

Like you, I went back and forth about doing the move. One day, when I was again wiping up the gas dribble from my cab corner after the neck overflowed, I decided that was a deal breaker with new paint. So, the tank got moved. I think I'll also like a little more leg room with the stock tank gone.

Just a thought.

Woohoo.

In my case it was an easy decision. The previous owner had removed the tank from the cab and filled in the hole. When I got the truck the tank was mounted in the bed of the truck and had a sheet of 1/8 welded across the truck bed to protect it.
I briefly toyed with the idea of putting it back in the cab (briefly)

I had a Mustang tank in a parts truck but I didn't like the filler neck situation, then fate reared its ugly head and a buddy gave me the Blazer tank. The rest is history

Digger, Woohooo!!

I installed a 70 mustang tank(22 gallon) in the frame rails of my 48 project using John Noilin's tank write up.Installation was pretty easy using the instructions(Thanks John).I had to modify the mounting frame that I had made because of the TCI bolt in leaf spring kit that I used.

Has any one looked at moving the gas tank on a 56 to the location on the 53-55s (outside the frame rails)? It would be nice to install a larger tank in that location. What would be the options with that as far as the filler neck? I am resisting putting the tank between the frame rails because ( I am assuming) that I would not be able to keep the spare tire in the stock location. Is that true?

I looked at that option. But a larger tank wasn't going to fit in that space. The 53-55 tanks were something like 16 gallons and filled the whole space. You could run two of those tanks, one on either side, (move the battery), and figure a way to share their volumes. You could graft a 53-55 filler panel on the lower cab corner, or run a straight drop tube from the 56 filler neck thru the floor.

Yes, the drawback to a rear-mounted tank is that it goes right where the spare stores. I'm just gonna throw my spare in the bed (under the tonneau). Or, I can just run without a spare.

C'mon, Scott....you know you want to move that tank!
