Hey, I have a 76 highboy that recently had a 302, I bought the truck without the motor. The truck has a 4 speed standard tranny, I was wondering if I could use a fuel injected 302 motor out of an 87 grand marquis, just change the intake manifold and set a carb on top? any help would be awesome
It would work but I don't think you would be satisfied with the torque. You would be better off putting a 351W in there. If your using the old flywheel you need to know what the inbalance is on it. Older 302s and all 351 windsors were 28 ounce inbalance. 28 ounce inbalace flywheels will not work on that 87 302 it would need a 50 ouncer.
a '76 highboy is a f250 4x4 that came only with the 360, 390 or ...300six? SO maybe they had the 300 and then the 302 would match with the tranny etc?
There is no way, even in lower hades, that i would run a true highboy with a 302. If it did have a 302 you could fit in a 351Windsor with little effort...and then have a better truck motor. IMO ford should never have put the 302 in any truck other than maybe the ranger. It's a great motor but not in a truck.
The guy a bought it from said he swapped in the 302 from a 300, because the 300 gave up, and he had the 302 lying around anyway. The truck now sits with no motor, I have thought about trying to find a 351W, but its hard to pass up a free 302 that runs strong haha. so you guys would recommend I find a 351W without question? I know parts are interchangable, so i could use the brackets and accessories off the 302
If you have the option of getting a 302 or 351.... for the love of all that is holy, get a 351. I have a 302 in my 2wd and I turn off the AC when I need to accelerate because I need every little ounce of "power" it puts out. It just doesn't have the guts to move these trucks. If you drive slow, never haul anything and already have a 302, then you'd probably be fine, but I would reconsider if I were you. Also, if you have a light foot, you'd probably get better gas mileage with the 351 because it doesn't have to work as hard.
EDIT: you posted when I was writing this post, so I guess you already do have a 302 then. I'd still reconsider...
As far as interchangable parts, the mounts are the same, it will connect to your trans, and most of the brackets are the same I think. I believe the only different one is the power steering bracket, which could be modified if needed. But I'm sure you could find the brackets you need in a junk yard if they aren't already on the 351.
302 to 351w is a very popular swap with these trucks and there are hundreds of threads related to the swap here. I'm rebuilding a 351 to replace my 302.<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>

I guess i"m looking for the most painless option, its looking like a 351. I'm not a huge power hog, but I am turning 38.5x15 tires. The 302 that was in it before seemed to work ok, it was a stock bottom end, shaved heads, alum. intake 600cfm with headers.
