They are a sealed unit no packing ,but there is a set of needle bearings that should be greased and packed every so often .They support your 4x4 axle shafts.

Schwenger, I have '99 250 SD, just chased down the grinding noise in my front-end. I tore apart my hubs, it was a fairly simple task. As soon as I pulled the hub assem, my inner needle bearings fell out on the ground. So, packing wasn't an option. I did replace that side with a new one, ( Checker Auto, 275.00, non- ABS ) and cleaned up the other. The failed bearing was a result of the previous owner not replacing the big yellow " O-ring ", very inportant! My front hubs weren't ABS equipped, so about half the cost.
So, if the bearings show any signs of wear, I would replace it. Cheap insurance down the road.

Sandmaniac, the little yellow o-ring does little to keep the moisture out of the needle bearings.
The large knuckle seal is the culprit that causes all the grief in our 4x4 setups on Dana 50/60 front ends.
The water comes in from the backside of the knuckle

Well at the dealer shop I worked at (since retired ) we had no problems after replacing o-rings an seals.
A big thing to look at is if the sealing surface that the o-ring or seal is trying to seal against is pitted with rust or a groove worn in it,Replace the part.
use grease on installation of these seals as recommended also.
Its not a requirement to chk vacuum.
if parts are worn replace them.
