just to add to this, your wrong about diesels, there almost always lowend torque, unless they have a massive turbo and it lags. peak torque in small diesels are like 1800 not sure, but in the bigger diesel engines there peak torque is probably like 1300-1500.
my cummins has 610 ft lbs stock at 1600rpm...it stays over 600 ft lbs all the way past 2500 rpm

yeah but a 460 doesn't even come close to it's peak tq until around 4000rpm which is past or at redline for most small diesels and WAY past redline on big diesels used in Semi's and trains (redline on the engine in the truck I drive is 2050rpm, which is where a gas motor just starts to build power )
haha, my C-12 in my Kenworth t-800 cat redlines at 1850...i hate it! It really sucks with a 3.90 rear and 10 spd. I think it makes 1650 ft lbs at 1200 rpm.

The 460 for my 92 has peak torque at 2200 rpm with about 420 lb's. I checked it all out a long tme ago.

maybe with mods it does, not stock the new 5.9 cummins only had 555 i think. and what did that comment mean? thats what i said. they make peak torque down low. and the trucks i drive i like the short gears, as long as the transmission isnt ****, its quite nice.
I know someone that just bought a brand new turbo diesel and someone asked him if it would be easy to smoke him and he said that it was more for high end power on a highway for towing.
He obviously didn't understand how a diesels power curve is. Diesels are made to have low RPM torque. If you look at power readings on diesels they are almost always higher torque than HP and the peak torque is in the low rpms. That is the main reason diesel axles have higher gears in them than gassers.

03-04.5 HO was 305 hp 555 ft lbs...04.5-07's were 325 hp, 610 ft lbs. I am talking stock flywheel.
Well all i have to say is give a 460 35lbs of intercooled boost, solid lifter cam, roller rockers, 19-1 compression, 5in exhaust, always open intake, 20000 psi fuel pressure, 4 valves per cylinder, and aluminum heads like all the new diesels have stock and see how they compare. any engine with those things better make power. the sad part is the diesel makes good power for about 2000 rpms or less and they are redlined.
GAS BIG BLOCKS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
they look better, smell better, sound better and they always got the job done in the past.
I am still trying to figure out what engine he is talking about because that combination doesn't match any factory diesel I know of. example 7.3 psd is 17:1, 18-20psi of boost and runs 55psi of fuel preasure and up to around 3000psi of high pressure oil to fire the injectors, the new 6.4 uses 26,000+ of high pressure fuel, up to 42 psi of boost (can't find the compression ratio)
the list goes on.
im just saying guys... diesels are nothing without a turbo. they do have high compression, (cummins 5.9 is around 18-19 to 1) and other things to help them produce alot of power but they still make very low hp numbers. i know they make torque but so does a 460.
You are comparing grapes to apples. I would typically say apples to oranges, but its even more different. I will take high torque over low HP anyday for a work truck. For fun, I would want a gasser, for getting there without worrying about it, give me a good diesel.
