i have a 98 4.0 sohc with 137k and,cel has been on for two months now with lean code for bank 1, misfire cyl.# 1, 4. changed plugs and wires motorcraft, changed both upper and lower intake gaskets, cleaned maf, and iac, just finished putting can of sea foam through pcv hose. and still runs rough noticed when getting on gas cel flashes. any ideas? thanks matt
When the check engine light is flashing, it means you have a misfire.
I'm guessing you're getting codes: P0171, P0301, P0304. It's possible a lean running condition could cause these plugs to foul out. Another possibility is fuel injector O-rings. Did you replace these and lube them up real well when you did the intake gaskets?
Get a can of spray carb cleaner and spray onto each injector, especially where they go into the intake. If you notice an idle change you've probably got a rolled or split o-ring.
While theoretically an O2 sensor can get biased, it's actually quite rare. Usually when an O2 dumps, it sets a code for "slow response".
As far as testing your injectors... you can remove them and have them "flow tested", but that's a pain in the butt and can cost more than just replacing them. Another test you can do is using an ohmmeter, test the resistance of the two terminals on each one. If you have one injector (or two) that have a much higher or lower resistance value than the others, then they are most likely bad. Just keep in mind that if they all past the resistance test, it's still possible a couple could be bad.
You could remove them and dip the tips into a solvent overnight to clean it up... then reinstall and see what happens.
