I am new to this forum. I have a major problem. Here is what happened.
My sister has a 96 4.0L Ford Ranger. 2 days ago she reported to me that the a/c compressor pulley sporadically seized. Today she started up her car and 2 minutes later the car died.
When i went to see what happened, here is what i saw in the engine compartment. First the serpentine belt is snapped in one place. The a/c compressor pulley has a spot of burnt rubber on the 2:00 position of the pulley. In addition the entire pulley, not the a/c compressor is a brick red color (All other pulleys are not of this color). The driver's side of the radiator fan is this brick red color also. In addition the tensioner has a spot of burnt rubber also. There is also a spot of brick red color on the alternator also.
I have no idea what could possibly be wrong. The serpentine belt is 2months old too so practically brand new. Any help/ideas of what could be wrong would be of great help...thank you so much
Neat!!! Not trying to be funny, but trying to put a positive spin on DESTRUCTION. A/C clutch sounds like she's seized good. Can you spin it by hand now that the belt has parted? The brick red colour has to come from the burning/burnt belt. Just transfered to the other parts as she was going POOF. Glad to hear you're lookin' after your sister.
maybe a mouse or other rodent was camping out on the ac and got stuck under the pully kinda reminds me of the frog in the blender. anyway check all the pulleys to see if they all turn.
the brick red color is probably the babbit/grease from the a/c clutch self destructing. you may be able to replace just the clutch itself. hmm guess i should hit the refresh button before i post

Oh Please!!! No more Rodent excuses!!! They've been played to death!!! It seems like every time something happens, it's a darned squirrel . I'm installing a great big rat trap right next to my battery next chance I get, lol.
so the truck is a 4.0L V6 with air conditioning, is there a way or can it be done where we buy a serpentine belt for the 4.0L V6 non-air conditioned and put that belt on instead...meaning we totally bypass that a/c compressor pulley?
Yes you should be able to do this I believe. I do not have the diagram on my truck anymore (anyone know where to get those decals from?), but on both of my other trucks, the A/C pulley can be bypassed without any issues.
Yes, the belt will slide right in under the a/c no problem. Just dont turn the a/c on and wonder why your engine is suddenly revving up on its own. Its your computer advancing the timing to make up for your compressor kicking on and without that pulley on there's no added power robbing compressor dragging the system down.

YES! This saved my butt on a 90 degree day once. Stupid lady in our camping group that shouldnt be towing had her compresser seize getting off the turnpike. Snapped the belt. Down the street was a NAPA, got to them 30 mins. before they closed for the holiday weekend, she was on her way in 15 mins. BTW, this was in 2000, she got rid of the explorer in 2004 and never fixed the a/c. She also swiped a toll booth with the camper, and blew a head gasket and head cruising at a nice 85 mph, towing 3800 lbs., while not in overdrive.
