The VIN may or may not contain what you're looking for. For some reason, people are under the impression that it contain axle & tranny info. All you can get out of a VIN is probably what you already know - body style, engine, and year.

The 8th digit in the VIN is the engine size. The VIN doesn't contain codes for transmission or rear axle. Those and other numbers are listed by themselves on the Warranty Plate.

Y = 4.9 EFI

Well for one thing the Vin's changed in 1981 but you didn't note which year truck you have so it could have an 11 (1980) or 17 digit Vin# (1981+)

Please more info

Just posting the vin number and rating plate info in your post would have been a huge help and it would have be decoded for you.

If it is newer than a 80..then go to this page for decoding

The "Y" code was used from 1983 to 1997 for trucks equipped with the 300. The 300 received EFI in 1987 and retained the same VIN code.
