I have an 01 diesel Excursion (7.3 PSD) and have modified it to use veggie oil. I want to relocate the fuel pump about one foot closer to the front of the vehicle to make room for a heat exchanger.
Does anyone see any issues with relocating the fuel pump? The new diesel tank is already about 3 feet closer to the front of the vehicle, so it shouldn't increase the load on the fuel pump. In addition I have an aux fuel pump for the veggie oil.
Ok, so I moved the fuel pump without a lot of hassle. Now the Ex doesn't start. It turns over, but runs really rough for a second and dies. I am a little low on diesel, so will add some, but do I need to bleed the fuel line since I moved the fuel pump?
I did a search and came up with some conflicting answers. Some said no, others said there's a valve somewhere on the rails.
Not knowing exactly how the high pressure injectors deal with air in the lines I would say it wouldn't hurt, I guess. Just turn the key to on without starting & the fuel pump should pressurize. Use something to open the shrader valve on the fuel rail (put a rag over it or something) and see if air comes out.
I honestly don't know exactly what you are doing. You have installed a DIFFERENT tank to use for your veggie oil? How does it mount and what is the capacity? Do you have to mix it with diesel or do you run straight veg' oil?

This was the case on my 'bruban diesel. There was a bleed screw on the fuel filter/resivoir under the hood. You had to open it, then go key on (not cranking) while the lift pumps prought the low pressure side of the fuel system up to pressure. Basicly, you stop when you see fuel squirt up out of the filter housing -and re-seal the blead screw.
That was on a 'burban - not sure what it's like on a Ford, but the same concept has to apply. The symptoms you describe are just like what happened to me when I drained the fuel line on mine.
Don't crank it too much without knowing there is fuel making it to the injector pump(s) & injectors. The fuel is the lube and it wears the injectors.
My current setup uses the stock Ex tank for Veggie oil and a new 24 gallon tank for diesel. The oil gets warmed in the stock tank, goes to a veggie oil only filter that is heated and also has an aux fuel pump before the main fuel pump.
When I started this last little project, I was adding a heat exchanger to the system, since the oil wasn't getting hot enough. It needs to be around 170 to go through the injectors without messing them up. Anyway, I had to move the exchanger behind the main fuel pump, and that's why I had to move the fuel pump the last time.
I know it sounds messed up, but I think it will work fine, once I get the Ex started.
thanks
