I have a 84 6.9 that likes to eat glow plugs! After the second set i put in it because the controller would come on randomly and burn them up, I put a manual toggle switch in and a new set of plugs. I only use the switch at max 8 seconds, but this set only lasted less than 10 starts. They are the motorcraft beru glow plugs. I am lost! Any suggestions?
Which ones did you instal ........ZD1A....... or....... ZD9 Shorten your on time may be the answer.......was this 8 seconds in winter below 32*F or above 32*F
It Was Above 32 Degrees, I Don't Exactly Remember The Part# But They Said Made In Germany On The Glow Plug.
If you are above 32F then 8 seconds is probably too long a time to glow the plugs.
Part of your the problem is probably also the use of the push button, it is amazing what variability you can get and how easily you can overwork the plug without realizing it.
My controller on my 93' has never failed me yet and works good. If you can stomach the cost upgrade to the newer glowplug controller. I have a button but use it only as back-up in case a glow plug burns out on me.
