I got to fire up the truck today. It did not go smoothly though. It was my fault of course. I had the timing off. I set it on the exhaust side up instead of the piston. Quick fix take out the first plug bring the piston up set timing. Next problem, or really first problem. I did not put the pitcock valve in the side of the block so when I put the antifreeze in it came right back out. Quci fix, I already had it just put it in. Next problem. I could not get gas up the carb. pulled line at pump and put air pressure in tank. Gas was right there. Next though I got a bad pump so I pulled pump. plenty of push if I would have had the lines hooked up correctly instead of backwards. Next problem...haha there was none. Fired right up sounded great. No exhaust pipe or muffler on yet.
It held 50 pounds of oil pressure as well.
Dueller I took video but don't know how to post it like you do. You will have to give me a lesson.
Next I adjusted the idle. Fine tuned timing.
Next checked the vacuum rear end works great.
Next checked brakes works great.
Next, hugged my dad and thanked him for the help. I could not get the smile off my face, still can't.
Problem, small leak from the radiator.
Boy does that engine sound sweet! I will work on interior tomorrow by putting in insulation on floors and walls.
Great feeling of accomplishment tonight thanks to so many of you on FTE.
Enjoy the great feeling, it`s worth the time, sweat and work of getting there.
I`m sure this truck will put alot more smiles on both of your faces for a very long time.
I know the feeling, my 272 fired right up on the first few turns of the starter after sitting for 4 years.
I did finally manage to fall asleep, but it was late so I slept in until 8.00 this morning. I have a couple of hours of work to do then I will start to work on the inside of the cab putting down sound deadener. I hope to finish that in 3 hours and go find some carpet remnant to put in next. I have today and tomorrow to get a lot of work done. I also want to have a muffler put on it tomorrow.
Great news about the truck, but bummer on the radiator. Where is it leaking? When I sent you the radiator it was in excellent working shape. It held pressure and coolant under pressure for a day at the radiator shop. If it didn't, then they'd fix it or I'd throw the core away.
I bet you that FedEx did a number on it in transport when they damaged it.
A major milestone has been passed, congrats!
Sorry to hear about the radiator, but at least the early ones are repairable. Worse case scenario crimp off that tube.
