My friend is driving a Uhaul truck he bought and the carrier bearing is smoking and leaking oil. He is on I75 South of Micanopy headed to Macon. I told him to drive slow to get as far as he could. He has his wife and children with him.
Should I tell him to keep going until it rattles too much? I think he has about 275 miles to home.
The carrier bearing will eventually get hot enough and tear up that rubber that surrounds the bearing within its mount. Then the drive shaft and bearing will spin in unison and rattle around inside the cage that mounts to the cross member on the truck. Basically he COULD drive it slowly 5 or 10 miles at the most, but I wouldnt chance it. I would personally use a cell phone or limp my way to a gas station and use a pay phone to call uhaul, they are liable for that type of maintenance and will most likely send out a guy to repair it. With the tools and part in hand I could change it out in about 30 minutes to an hour. That time would increase if the bearing got super hot and siezed onto the drive shaft, then it will need to be either cut off, or taken off with an air hammer or something. He NEEDS to call uhaul, asap!
If he is not past Ocala yet, tell him to get off at Exit 326. It's the first exit past Ocala. There are some shops there. If I had a press I would do it for him. I would not drive 275 miles like that, unless it was my only choice.
