Superchip tuner

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Oct-02 AT 02:29 PM (EST)]Since my questions were not answered under the superchip section I'll post it here.

Is it true I can only used my superchip tuner on one vehicle. I havne't opeded it yet but after reading the directions it seems this is the case. I have 3 ford vehicles and I would hate to think that I have to buy three of these things when one is all I need. Of course I could have missed something in the reading.

Thanks all.

I don't show any postings there with your user id... did you post a question there?

Yes, its true. Why would a company make a product that can be used to tune all your friends vehicles, by a garage several times, etc.? Or you could buy one and decide to charge people to tune their vehicles. Any company that didn't tune lock their programmer would quickly find themselves put out of business by their own products. The Superchips tuner is this way, the Hypertech is, and the new Diablo GM Predator is the same one. Just as with a chip: one program per vehicle. Its really no different than buying software for your PC, free duplication is pirating.

it was the last post. it is ok.
i can see where they/you are comming from. i was hoping it would have memory for X number of vehicles. would have been cheaper to get the chip but incase i want to do advanced tunning this is better. i don't mind just would have been nice.

Well I will see how it works in about 2 hours.

Thanks.

Rich,

Please share your findings here - It seems we're both interested in some of the same questions.

I'm thinking about getting a mass-air kit and a cat-back exhaust kit to go along with this chip tuner too. However, my last questions (same post) also went unanswered. I'm glad you're taking the shot at this and willing to share your experience.

Have a great week and good luck!

(phew - that's a mouthfull)

Oh ya, and in need of some more "umph" hopefully from a mass-air kit, cat-back exhaust setup and a chip tuner

Cat-back exhausts do not require custom coding. MAF's, in order to get proper A/F ratios do require it. The Micro Tuner is generally not recommended for such applications and a custom chip is the way to go.

Thanks Ken - I've heard really good things about the MAF kits (HP and Mileage) . . . I think that may be the best "bang for buck;" especially when accompanied by a well-tuned chip.

What are your opinions on the MAF kits?

Thanks,
Todd

Of the common changes, do it last. Chips and exhausts are probably the best bang for the buck. MAFs, as part of a total package, can yield good results. I've not heard a lot of great things about them when used by themselves. Granettelli is the most common I run across and I do a custom chip for them at least 1-2 times per week.

So Ken, would I be better off getting a chip than a programmer if I eventually will get a MAF sensor?

Or, another question may make it so I get the tuner;

If I buy the tuner, can I use it on my 5.4L F150 4x4; restore the factory settings - say in a year. And, use the same tuner on my 4.6L 32Valve Mark VIII or another F150 user (just one)? It seems as this should work.

You compared the programers to software licencing at one point - most software licenses allow for the use of the program on any one computer at a time (i.e. if you take it off one you can put it on another). So, once the factory reset is done would this work on another car - either my Mark VIII or give it to another F150 user.

Thanks,
Todd

See the answer to your second question. :-)

Yes, the tuner can be used on another Ford truck so long as you restore the current one to stock programming. It can not be used on the Ford cars.

Thanks Ken - the tuner sounds like it will be perfect for me then.

Rich - What were your results; ease of installation/improved power/etc.?

Thanks,
Todd
