Truck: 1977 f-250 4wd with the 300 straight 6 with 4 speed on the floor, not a hi-boy
Only markings on current carb say its a ford manfactured by carter, no other tags, markings
Truck will stay running while I have the choked almost fully on (manual choke), but as soon as I open the choke the truck starts to die and dies unless I keep my foot on the gas. I have never owned a carb. engine all have been fuel injected. Does this problem sound like a carb issue?
Alos while looking around at it there are to small hoses that come off the carb one on the right side and one on the left side, but they are real short and both have a screw pushed in them so they dont go anywhere right now. Can this be part of the problem?
Sounds like you either have a vacuum leak or the idle mixture screw is not adjusted properly. The EGR valve could also be stuck open with carbin build-up.
The mixture screw is on the bottom of the carb in the base with a spring around it. Try backing it out a couple of turns to see if it helps.
I agree, sounds like it's vacuum-related. I'd also investigate why the last owner plugged off those vacuum hoses; it could be related to your problem. This might be some sort of quick fix gone bad.
