I would first check and see if your driveshaft going from the tranny to the transfer case is turning when you put the truck in drive with the 4x4 disengaged. If it does spin then check to see if the rear driveshaft is turning also. If it does then your rearend is shot if the back shaft doesn't spin then your looking at transfercase troubles. I am guessing that the transfercase is for some reason is only engaging the front shaft.

yes the front shaft turns, dont think rear shaft turns. is it rebuilable, or needs replaced? i removed the parking pawl because it was broke, would this have anything to do with it? havent done anything to cause any problems, truck just sits most of the time.

I think that there are two shift rails, one for front drive and one for rear drive. There might be a linkage problem that is keeping the rear shift rail in the neutral position. If that is the problem then it could be an easy fix.Maybe you could have some one watch the shift rails for movement while the transfer case is shift through the full gear selection.

after looking thru my manuals it seems that either the rear shift rail has seized up from sitting or the shift rail link that connects both rails has become disconnected from the rear shift rail, there for only the front rail is moving with the tc shifter. these rails are located on the top of the tc.The passenger side rail should be the one that engages the rear driveshaft.

might be a good reason to do a twinstick!!!! you can either buy the kit to do it or make one yourself, there has been a few threads about it.

The 2 stick idea is a great idea! I'm not sure where to find one of these kits but bronco graveyard or jegs might be a good start.

Basically the 2 stick lets you control the front and rear drives seperatly. One lever for the front axle, and one lever for the rear. For off roading this a valuable tool. Say that you are climbing an upward inclince, when you hit the gas pedal , the spinning back tires are shifting your truck down towards a rock or a tree. Then you could disengage the rear axle into the netueral position and pull your truck up the incline with just your front axle drive. Or if you are getting stuck because one axle is just digging deeper while the other axle is tracking better, then you would disengage the axle that is just burying itself and let the let the other axle pull you out before the other axle spins untill it ends up high centered. This is a great option seems that you might have a linkage problem to start with. Contact Skyjacker- They will help you or will recommend you a reputable vendor.
