I changed the fuel filter a few days ago on my 2000 F350 powerstroke. Drove a few places, no problems. Went to leave and fuel started spewing out. Had it towed home and checked under the hood and fuel was coming out from the o ring on the fuel filter cap. Replaced filter and same thing , fuel spewing out. Cleaned the fuel return line no fuel coming out. Truck run for about 30 min. no fuel. shut truck off for a little while and crunk it back up , started spewing fuel out again. Any suggestions on why this is happening?
Is the fuel filter drain valve open? Mine is yellow on the rear bottom of the filter. The lever should be to the passenger side to be closed. If it isn't fully closed you might be leaking there. Just a thought,, I also had a comment about fuel drip can't find either. Jim
Are you using OEM filters and the original cap? I made the mistake of using an aftermarket filter and the cap that came with it and it leaked like crazy. I had to really tighten it down to make it stop. I have since purchased an OEM cap and filter for the next change.
When you changed the filter did you make sure that the old o ring was out ? Are you using the factory style (cap is one piece filter is another) or aftermarket style all one piece? I have found that the one piece filter is very easy to crossthread.
We replaced filter and seal with a new one. Used original factory cap and also tried filter with cap made on it . still spewed. cleaned the fuel return line, crunk truck run for a little while no fuel spewing out. shut truck off for a while and crunk it back up , started spewing again from under the filter seal. one minute it will spew and another minute it won't do anything.
I would check for cracks in the fuel filter canister since you have tried to different lids and it still leaked. Did you have use a lot of force to loosen or tighten the filters ?
Only 5 things I can think of:
1. Crossthreaded cap
2. Overtightened or not tight enough cap
3. Not lubed gasket and pinched or binding
4. Oring not installed or two of them in there
5. Beveled gasket installed upside down
have checked cap ,canister, seal and all those things. just wondering, when we clean the fuel return line and hook it back up it does fine but starts all over again a little while later. could it have something to do with the fuel return line?

What do you mean by cleaning the return line? Have you removed the stock pressure regulator as well while cleaning? If there is a problem with the return/regulator assembly, then it certainly can build up more pressure than it needs there.
going by the book it is called the fuel return line that is on the side of the housing ,was told that it is or has a check valve there. even talked to ford the other day nobody knows anything
What book are you using? AFAIK, the only thing resembling a check valve is the stock fuel pressure regulator located in the fitting on the top side of the bowl to which the return line connects.
