Question 86 Automatic - Manual

Hey Guys,
I would have to say that i am deffinatly a first timer at these form things.
I would also like to say HI to everyone.
I do havea quick or possibly a tuff question for some. But I have a 1989 Ford F-150 with a 5-speed manual and a 4.9/300CID EFI. I the engine in the truck is Junk. But I also have a 1986 F-150 same body size (std. cab short box lariat). My '86 has a 5.8/351W w/ 4BBl. Carb. and an C6 Automatic Trans. Now bothe Trucks are 2WD. It's just that I am the Fist one in my family to be able to break a C6 Transmission. Now i don't have tomuch money but i do have time to spend on it.
So, that brings me to my question. Could I install the manual trans. from the '89 into the '86 and would i have any problems with the trans lining up?
I was also wondering if anybody could give me any pointers on this?

the trans will bolt up so will the flywheel but DO NOT USE the 300 flywheel because its got a diferent balence than the 351. if both trucks the same you can do the swap easy shouldnt be no problem just have to find a diferent flywheel

oh and you think that 11" clutch from the '89 4.9l would work on the 5.8l? or would the clutch for the 5.8l fit into the bell housing of the manual trans from the 4.9l?

and just so you know the 5-speed Manual trans from the '89 is one of those Mazda/Toyo Transmissions. Would it still work?

The 300-6 had the Mazda tranny? The M5OD? Does it look like this?

If so, do not put that behind a 351W...it'll snap that thing in short order.

it looks similiar but the shifter it more in the middle/front of the trans.

i am curious why you say not to put it behind a 351 when it came from a 4.9l Torc Moster. Like i said just curious and willing to learn new things.

The M5OD is not known for it's strength. It will survive for a while, but if you plan on doing anything really strenuous such as hard 4x4 or racing, I'd suggest a larger, more heavy duty tranny. The M5OD is great for running around town, minor racing, etc., and they are used behind 302s, even mildly modified, in Ranger V8 swaps all the time. But the 351W is really starting to push the limits of the tranny, even the HD R1 version from the Ranger or the R2 from the F-150.

i agree with the guys about the m5OD its alright for around town..... but.. if i was you .. depending on wat your doing... the 4spd with the granny gears .. i believe its a t-18 ?... or t-15 cant remeber... but its a bullet proof tranny i have one in my 84 f-150 standard cab.... short box stepside.. and i got a 351w h.o ... with a aluminum intake 4bbl edle brock carb... mild intake... and headers.. and i pound the truck... and i've had the same clutch in it .. for almost 6 yrs.... and that tranny just wont quit only bad thing is...... its basically a 3spd cuz 1st is so slow... and so is reverse.. but im very happy with it

I'm doing a similar swap between a 1990 F-250 and my 1985 F-250. The clutch pedal assembly appears to be the same from 1985-1990, so for the most part it should bolt in. The only holes it looks like I may have to drill will be for the Master cylinder. The floor pan around the shifter is removable so you dont have to try cutting a hole for the shifter.

While the M5OD is weaker than the ZF tranny, they aren't that brittle either. I had one in a 95 F-150 with a 302, I beat the tar out of it, spinning tires, downshifting way to early to get the tires to squeal and pulling 8-10k worth of equipment. It was still running just fine with 220k miles last time I saw it.

The big thing about the M5 is keeping oil in it. The case has a couple plastic plugs in it that are known for leaking and when the trans gets low on fluid is when they're known for grenading.

If you keep fluid in it and drive somewhat sanely, it should last. (A while at least)

Just thought I would let you know, I was going through my truck today and noticed there is an indentation in the firewall to make holes for mounting the clutch master cylinder. They aren't visible from the engine compartment just from inside the cab.
