I have a 86 460 that wont stay running. It will run for exactly 30 seconds then start to hesitate and die.If you turn the key off then restart it will do it again. It does not appear to be a fuel pump or fuse problem (Has alot of gas) when the line is off. This all started after I washed off some areas under the hood. Also have checked the distributer cap.any suggestions.
Well , like they said earlier check the connections but in doing the make shure that they are all Clean and DRY. I would also check to make shure that while cleaning under you hood you didn't blow anything into the carb. or linkage (ie. the choke side of the carb). Give that a try and let me know how it all pans out.
I pulled apart all connections at the dist, cont.module and oil presure switch and any others I could find. I shot wd40 in them and then blew them out with compressed air.It did make a change. Now after 30 seconds of running(warmed up)it wont die but it does start blubering real bad.If you shut it off and then restart, the 30 sec. timer starts all over.whats up with the 30 sec. timer? anyway thank you for the help so far.
It might be a fuel problem. If it dies on you, instead of re-starting, take the aircleaner off and see if any fuel squirts down the carb when you push the throttle back.
The reason I think it's fuel is your truck may have electric fuel pumps since you have a 460. When the truck is cranked, the fuel pump relay gets it's power directly from the starter solenoid. After it starts, then the fuel pump relay gets it's power through the oil pressure switch like someone else mentioned.
So it may be filling the carb up during starting, but if there is something wrong with the oil pressure switch, or the oil pressure itself, the pump relay will drop out, and then the engine is running on what little fuel is sitting in the carb till that runs dry.
I pulled the air cleaner off and there seems to be plenty of fuel after it died.but it seems to be running longer after I cleaned all connections.I also tried pulling then reataching the wires on the oil presure switch.Dont know if that resets the fuel pump or not.Did not make a difference even when running.Does anyone think it could be a electical/vacuum problem? thanks again
That Was The First That I Tried.it Seems To Be Getting Worse Will Not Stay Running At All.hooked Up An Inline Fuel Presure Guage And Im Getting Nothing.will Try A New Pump Tomorow Night.i Will Let You Know. EVEN INSTALLED A NEW CAP AND ROTOR.
