My aerostar has started pinging under moderate accelleration the last few tanks of gas. Tried different gas stations does seem to be a fuel quality problem. Would a K&N panel filter cause the 4.0 to lean out that much?
Possible. The oil used on the K&N filter can build up on the MAF sensor element, causing incorrect reading. But I'm not sure which direction that will drive the fuel mixture.
You can try replacing the K&N with a conventional filter and cleaning off the MAF sensor element with something like Gumout spray.
I'm not sure that problem is in fuel quality. Well. Try to read OBD data (actual valuies). What the O2 sensor reads? and what MAF reads. If U ave no obd-2 scaner ore scaning tool for your computer try to use AVO meter to see what is the voltage on O2 sensor. Normally it reads variating signal lean-reach-lean-reach. If it reads lean constantly ore reach constantly, you have a problem. The next step - to
Believe it ir not mine has done this from time to time as well. I have a differnt take on it. I don't know your driving habits as in how far you drive your van daily. If your like most of us working stiffs you might not drive 10 miles in one shot to get to your work, school etc... each morning. When a auto does get a proper "warm-up" on a daily basis an engines oil will from time to time not be able to burn off your fuel that is in your compression chambers and what ends up happening is that raw fuel will dump down into your crank case and end up breaking down the oil to a some what thin base which then allows the knocking from time to time that you speak of. The next time you change your oil try adding an premium oil additive that you can buy off of the shelf and see if this doesn't at least help you. I was always taught that a vehicle should be drive for 10 miles or for at least 10 minutes each day for proper warming up of the engine. I hope that I have helped.
95awd,
must be 4L? since you have AWD
4L Ford OHV engines are notorious for preignition pinging from combustion chamber carbon deposit buildup. Ford even had a TSB on it and came out with their own overpriced cleaner
if xlt's good info on the K&N know oiling of MAF problem does not solve it
do a complete decarb of combustion
search Aerof forum for directions.....
full bottle of Regane injector cleaner in half tank of gas or Chevron Pure One, none of the cheap stuff
can of Berryman's B12 sucked down TB thru plate hole with 1/8" tube into 2k rpm engine....let engine set for couple hours and out to freeway, hard drive
follow up with 1 qt of water sucked into engine via same technique
disconnect batt. neg- lead for 5 minutes to clear PCM KAM so engine computer relearns correct parameters
no need for K&N diaper filters on Aero....air intake system will flow far more than Aero engine needs even at 6k rpm....waste of money and they leak in too much dust and fine particles into engine....
the Baja racers only use fake K&Ns mounted up high for advertising cash....the real synthetic dry fiber filter is inside, protected and easily changed by navigator
put the $30 into good lubricants and tranny gentle flush with Mobil 1 ATF
How long has it been since it was tuned up?
I think I have eliminated my pinging. After cleaning the MAF, Seafoam, new O2 sensor and filters with no results, I replaced the plugs with Autolite double plats. It has not pinged since and I am able to run 87 octane again.
vango has good info
Autolite or the more expensive Motorcraft Autolite clones in double platinum only in the 4L. Autolite makes the correct heat range plug, others only try
the 97 4L Aero with the lean burn head design is not nearly as suseptible to pinging preignition, better air/fuel mix flow in redesigned combustion chamber....do NOT run 97 heads with an earlier PCM
the 3L is not as critical on plugs until one gets into post 95 with the EDIS
Possible. The oil used on the K&N filter can build up on the MAF sensor element, causing incorrect reading. But I'm not sure which direction that will drive the fuel mixture.
Oil on the MAF wire element should mask air flow sensing (less volume) since oil is an insulator of heat & the injector pulse width would DECREASE to compensate. However, the o2 sensor still monitors the exhaust o2 & will detect lean mixture, the reading from the o2 sensor would command increased injector pulse width via +ive fuel trim. The o2 sensor has the last word! If my hypothesis is correct, in this case the long term fuel trim would read in the + range to correct for lean mixture........ if this situation becomes excessive (ie.the MAF wire is totally masked from air flow, the fuel trims will exceed 40% & a code will be set & the engine MIL comes on.
Does the 4L have a knock sensor?

Reason: update
takes an act of God to set the CEL on pre 96 OBDI EEC-IV Fords
failed O2 not guarentee to set CEL
the pre 2000s OHV Ford V6s do not have a knock sensor....later technology
vacuum leaks will also cause pinging knock from lean mix....Aero 4L shakes and blows the vac. hoses off and plenum/intake manifold bolts work loose from all the shaking going on
BTW, ones reading 96_4WDR's advices to decarbone my engine, I decided to do it. WOW! what a smoke!!!!! Black and blue!!!!! Birds fall down! But no detonation now. Before decarbonisation I had 15.1 compression and I had to use oct 95 gas. Now I use mix of 93 and 80 gas. runs well!!!!
Yeah! you are right! Alcohol burns well! When I was yong boy we made small radio-controlled aircrafts with engines working on mix of alcohol and oil! I loved air battels, we added old film from Video-cassete to stabiliser and the purpose was to cut this film away with propeller.
Onece during the competition I lost controll and my plane hit coatch's ***. Our team was discvalififcated.
As I can see girl driving van with manual tranny is dangerous like a fashist in a tank. I don't know why, but manual tranny for girl is like a pars of higher mathematics mixed with latest theories of the aerodinamics.... She does not know what to press and how to shift.
