Hello all I'm new to this forum; generally me and Evangaline (73 F-100) hangout in the 73 -79 forum. I'm looking at a 2000 Ex that is loaded and has a V-10 with 125000 km on it for $25,000 Cdn. I need something to tow my wife; her 4400 lb travel trailer; and our 4 kids around. Since I truck for a living the Ex appeals to my "big rig" mentality. Just looking for opinions on this deal I'm looking at. Anything I should be mindful of ? Am I crazy to hope for 10 mpg towing "her" trailer ? How does the V-10 do in high altitudes; we like to camp in the Rocky Mountains. Any advice to this first timer would be appreciated. Thanks.
Yeah, of all the SUV's around, I can see why the Excursion would appeal to your Big Rig mentality It seems really big to me, but coming from a true truck, it must seem really small. Amazing how differing frames of refrence make the X seem either really big or really small
As to your questions, I can only talk from personal experience. I have a 2000 X with the v10, that actually just rolled over 100,000 mi today, with no major issues
As far as mileage goes, 10 seems a little high for towing, although that will depend slightly on gearing. I tow a ~3000 lb cargo trailer and get in 8 mpg range.
As far as high altitude goes, its no diesel (no turbo to make up for thin air) but its still a big motor (haha i guess thats relative too ) and I doubt you will have any problems. Im sure others will chime in too on that.
Congrats on the find! I'm sure you'll love it!
Hope that helps!
Isaac
But I do have one question for you, since you said you truck for a living. What kind of mileage do you get in your truck? I'm not sure, but it will probably make my 9.5 seem great. haha
8mpg towing a 3K trailer!?! Holy crap. Either you drive waaaaaaaay too fast of something is wrong. I could tow my 3500lb horse trailer LOADED with horses and tack (another 3K) and get 8 on two lane roads. But usually saw 10.
I see no reason why a guy couldn't get 10 pulling a 4500# camper.
Its a 7x16 enclosed (2 dirt bikes/a 4 wheeler, maybe closer to 3500 lbs) thats considerably taller than the X, so its got a fair amount of drag... I usually tow at about 70ish mph (OD on), but its east Texas, which gets pretty hilly though, so that might be it But if youve got mileage ideas, let me know! lol
Thanks everyone for your opinions so far. I don't mind being crazy in the milage dept. My 2000 Western Star gets 3 to 4 mpg with a C-12 (425 HP) on average so 8 mpg will seem good. Its all about form and function for me. I'll pay extra to feel good going down the road.
I forgot to mention the Ex I'm looking at is a 4X4 and brought up from Texas but it must have origionally been made for Canada due to the speedo being in km/hr.
The price sounds a bit high to me compared to the one I just bought. An '01 X Limitted w/ 103K & v10 - got it for about $12,800 US. I know mine has higher miles but your's is also a year older. What is the conversion for $US to $Canadian?
you should be able to get a 2004-05 v10 for that price if you look around.down here in minnesota they are just abouit giving the v10s away as gas approches 3.00 a gallon either that or look at much lower milage/km older models

Agreed. I just bought mine (as above: '01 X Limitted v10 w/104k) for $12800 US in the Minneapolis metro area. The numbers you're quoteing seem WAY high - unless the market is substantially different in Canada.
Interesting price info. There is a high demand for 4X4 SUV's in this part of Alberta and also alot of folks making the money required to afford them. Add to that the whole enviromentalist - drive a pedal bike - blah blah blah - tree hugger opinion doesn't get much attention in oil rich places like here but there still shouldn't be that big a diffrence in prices. Maybe the broker is trying to get rich quick !?!
