I bought a used set off a 78 f250 , I got them home and noticed that someone had welded the center locating pin that goes into the perches. They are broke.
I got new half inch by 2 1/2' fine thread ones but they are a little to big to go through the holes.
I have tried to drill them and Im using a new colbolt bit. I cant get through them at all. I have applied drill cutting oil and slow speed but cant get it done.
Are you trying to drill out the old center pins, or are you trying to drill the leaf springs to accomodate the slightly larger replacement pins?
If you are trying to remove the old pins that are welded in, you should use a c-clamp to hold the springs together, and drive the pin out with a large drift pin, and hammer. Spring steel is hard to weld to, and the pin will come free with a little help and a good whack with a BFH.
If you are trying to drill the holes larger, just go to the parts supply store, and get the right bolts. They only cost a few bucks, and you will be time, and money ahead by not burning up drill bits. Spring steel is not that tough to get through, but you will still be way ahead by just getting the right bolt.
