Hey just picked up my new 2001 F350 psd. Drove about 20 miles, pulled into O'Reilys parts, the service engine light came on. I parked the truck went inside bought some stuff and came out. Truck would crank, but not start. Tried to start once, but did not stay running. Got the code reader from the store, all it said was MIL not on. After about 15 minutes and checking fuses, I tried again, she fired up and ran great.
what is the problem? Is it the Cam shaft sensor I hear about?
Do not be discouraged Tom. It is almost without a doubt the CPS. Also, generic code readers and a lot of supposed better ones will not pull codes from the PSD, so don't think that there is something wrong with your truck as far as that goes. Bummer having that in the first days of the truck but better in the parking lot than in the intersection.
I am still amazed that they haven't had their socks sued off over that CPS.
I was a little nervous about buying a truck on Friday the 13th. Thanks for the help. looks pretty easy to install from the instructions off here. Put about 30 miles on today and loved it.
Congrats on your new truck. I'm happier for you knowing that its a 2001 new. Friday the 13th aint nothin but another day and it probably is the CPS. But as much trouble as everybody says these CPS's are I've only replaced it one time in over 170,000mi. Oops, I shouldn't have said that.
It is strange I can run it in the driveway for 30 minutes. turn it off. Try to start it and it may start and run for 5 seconds and shut off, or not start at all. Let is sit for 15 minutes, and most of the time she will fire back up. Is there anything else I should look at first?
CPS problems can be very erratic, from a complete no start to timing errors that can cause intermittent no starts. On an 01 the tach should move (although some dont and are fine) to about 100rpm during cranking. Not moving is a sign odf a CPS problem.
Another big thing to remember on the trucks is OIL OIL OIL. A PSD uses High Pressure oil to fire the injectors and old, low, or wrong type oil can cause issues from rough running to no starting.
You could try unplugging the CPS and making sure that there is no corrosion in the connectors. A few of these trucks have stalling problems in wet weather only.
I will try that. I found a CPS at the International parts dealer in Omaha - $109, alot cheaper than Napa and O'Reilys. 60 mile drive, but Oh well. Wish I could drive my new truck there!
thanks for the help, I will post back to let you know how it went.
Well I changed the CPS today. Fired the truck up, drove it around the block - about 3 miles, brought it home, shut it off, started again, touche the fuel pedal, she reved up then died. waited several seconds, turned the key, waited for the light, cranked it, she fired, touched the fuel pedal, dead. Now she won't start, but probably will in about 10 minutes. Seems like it is not getting enough fuel? But runs fine once I get her going. what the heck is it, fuel pump, filter, ?????????? Please help.
When was the last fuel filter change?
When was the last oil change?
When it does crank does it run a little rough before it dies when you push the pedal?
It could be any of those. Change your filter if in doubt. You can get an idea on you pump by opening your fuel bowl drain and cycling your switch. Your pump should flow a steady and hard stream out the drain tube. Did you use a OEM CPS?
Also, when it does run, does it run good. Give more info on your truck...what year... miles on the clock..ect.
