Gas tank and conversion Qs

So I am restifying a 1978 F-250 Crewcab, which has dual tanks, and they have been unused for a couple of years. What do I need to do to the tanks to get them trustworthy again? there were no problems with them before I took the truck apart, but want to make sure they are fine before i reinstall them. The outside of the tanks look great, with only slight surface rust on them. Has anyone used the various tank liners such as the por15? Is there a best type to use? do I need to coat them?

Also, I am swapping in a 351 from a '89 F-250, and am wondering what will need to be done to make the old style tanks compatible with the EFI, Do I just run a electric pump after the tank selector valve? Do I need a return line? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Clean them out with hot water and soap, then rinse with Heat and a little gas.

Just use a high pressure pump after the tank selector.

Thanks Torque1st, I appreciate it.

Should I put something in there to scrape away the rust? such as rocks or something?

Do I need a return line? or is that necesary with an '89?

Has anyone actually used any of those tank liners? I won't do it if it is not needed, but I wan't it to be right the first time, especially since it will be FI and a daily driver.

If they have a bunch of rust inside or sludge left from the gas you might need to use a couple pounds of nuts, bolts, and screws to scour out the tank. There are a number of gas tank cleaning and repair threads here and in the garage forum.

With a standard bypass regulator you will need a return line and the newer EFI selector valve with a return line valve (6 ports).

You will need all the controls, electronics, hoses, sensors and tubes. Check with the engine swap forum for more information. There have been any number of retrofits discussed there.

You will need the low pressure pumps in the tanks as well to feed the high pressure pump on the frame. These do not suck fuel very well and you will have starting problems without them. Perhaps you can use the pumps/sending units from the donor truck. Even the tanks perhaps. This way you will have the return ports on the sending units and it will be an easier swap.

Thanks guys, the truck had a electric fuel pump on it, the block mounted one was abandoned, this seemed to work fine for the carburated I300, do I really need two in tank low pressure pumps? or would just one low press. before the high press. pump work?

If you are running EFI you will. You need 40 to 50psi to run EFI and the low pressure pumps to feed the high pressure pump because the high pressure pump will not suck from the tanks very well.
