I keep a 2M Icom in the Bronco, but there is very little if any chatter in my area... use it to listen to local LE/FD and FS ..... I keep it scanning when I am in a new area.
thats sounds like the one ive got...its a REALLY good radio.
ive been able to talk to some of my friends up on the trail while i was headed in to town for supplies...we mustve been @ least 20 miles apart - maybe more...thing worked like a charm - clear as a bell. i was MORE than impressed with the ICOM.
Right on. I forgot to ask you when we were having coffee.
Are you set up? I use my buddies station until I can get going.
I have the gear but I have not put it into the truck yet. Have to decide what I am going to do for a stereo, as the VHF will be mounted under it. And I haven't allocated any funds for a stereo as I have more important things to buy like tires and a newer 40/20/40 bench.
Not sure what to do for HF as my radio as it's pretty big (Kenwood TS-440SAT). If I do install HF in this truck, I might just get a smaller radio for HF use and keep the old Kenwood at home, but again, "more ham radios" is a low financial priority. In my last vehicle, I removed the glove box and had a custom aluminum mount built for it. Ran a Hamstick for use on 80m.
Everyone feels differently about the install, but I keep mine installed in the open and screwed to the floorboard under the ashtray.... the reason is I can uninstall the radio with a screwdriver in a few minutes.... I have it wired to a cig lighter plug for power and a mag antenna.... it's not as strong, but I can move it to another vehicle in just a few minutes if the need arises.
I have a dual band handheld as well, but I don't always carry it with me and batteries can and will go dead.
