Working on my '76 Supercab with the I6, I've noticed a ticking/crackling/electrical fluctuation noise that is loud near the coil and distributor cap when I turn my key to the on position before starting the truck. I think something is interrupting the steady flow of current. I don't notice it while the engine is running, 'cuz everything else (Ford steering pumps!) is overpowering the sound. Any idea what could be causing it?
Voltage regulator? I know it needs replaced.... I've checked my grounds, they're good....couldn't find a loose wire or anything.
Check to see if your starter solenoid is causeing it. With the engine off and key on unhook the small wires on the front of the solenoid and see if the snapping noise stops.
My truck did the same thing. I replaced the starter solenoid and I haven't had the problem since. Does it continue to run with the key turn off?
are all of your wires good? check the wires and connections between the dizzy and DS box and the coil, sometimes the piece on the coil can come loose and not seat itself all the way. i'd also say check your plug wires, in case for some reason its trying to send a spark and you're hearing the arc, but with the engine off, that shouldn't be the problem
New plug wires, checked coil wires and connections, cleaned them up....still does it. I'm not sure if it's affecting the driveability, it seems to idle and run fine...I just figured it couldn't be good. I also replaced the starter solenoid, so I know it's not that either. It's also got a new ign. module as well.
