viair pressure switch ?????

For all you guys that have a viair compressor,i have a question.
How did you install your pressure switch,i mean does your switch go right to the compressor,or did you use a relay to turn the compressor on and off, with out sending full current to the compressor.

Ok another question, what psi is your switch and what psi does it actually shut off at.
I have the 200 psi switch,i had it up to 225 psi and it didnt turn off.
So im just curious as if yours goes high then the shut off number thats labeled.

It should shut off at the number it's labeled at and then turn on at about 20 psi less than that. I have a 180 psi switch in mine, shuts off at 180 psi, kicks on at 160 psi. If you had it up to 225 there is a definite problem. Could be your gauge reading incorrectly or is could be the pressure switch.

You might try a different gauge, and if it's still running high then it's the pressure switch. You're obviously getting power to the pump relay from the switch, assuming it's wired correctly (Heat's diagram is perfect), so that narrows it down to the switch. If you got it from Seige, they're great about replacing defective parts. If not, see how difficult it will be to get it warrantied. If it's a PITA, PM me.

Thanks JT,i did try both gauges off of my gas rigid compressor,so i dont think its the gauge. And i did install the relay, cutting the trigger wire and wiring the pressure switch to it.So the pressure switch is getting no load what so ever.

Thanks

You've definately done the troubleshoot down to the switch. Did you get it from Seige?

I hooked the pressure switch to the ground wire. Thats how the 3L system from seige was. ONe wire to ground. One wire to the neg on the pump

I just checked out Heat Stroked's setup. Man, that does look sweet. I just switched over to the viair compressor and the 5 gallon tank. I used the same wiring and relay that I had in place for the 3L system. I've been trying to come up with a good place to mount the tank. It looks like I'll have to get a little creative. P.S. I like the coupler out the back.

Thanks all!

Been a while since I installed the system. The pressure switch I installed is a 145 / 105. Most horns are good in the 125-150 range, otherwise you can blow a diaphragm if you're not careful, that is why I installed the Grainger regulator post tank / pre- horn.
Anyway Green, you either have a bad pressure switch, a bad relay or somehow bypassing the switch / relay and going directly to the compressor.

About 6 months after my install, my compressor would not start up, went direct 12 vdc, etc. every troubleshooting method out there. Replaced the compressor, pressure switch, etc. Ended up being a bad relay. relay seemed to meter good, still dumbfounded.

I've got my relay and pressure switch hooked up exactly like Heat does. Keyed power to one side of the pressure switch, other wire goes to power the relay. Well, I do have a switch in the cab to cut the power to the pressure switch in case I want to turn the pump off, but otherwise it's the same. My pump is grounded directly to the frame.

Come to think of it, I don't think I followed the Seige directions at all. I just looked at all the parts and hooked it up how it all made sense to me.

I was thinking about doing this as well, but the only regulators I seem to find are 1/8" NPT fittings. With the 1/2" line going to the horns, I don't want to restrict it any. Can you point me to the regulator you used?
