One of the other ideas i had was to find a way to either swap my front axle with an electric axle, or else swap to a 4WD axle and connect a electric motor to the diff, so i could use it on demand but still derive primary drive power from the V10.
So in an offroad instance i could have a small lever on the center console that moved forwards and backwards from a center position, nudging it forwards would cause the electic axle to pull forwards, and pulling it backwards would trigger reverse, so it could be used in a supplementary fasion, including if i was ever racing someone, or taking a steep hill simply nudge the "boost" lever and apply instant power.
that one was a bit of a pipe dream however.
I think inevitably they will have to put some type of fuel cell in the vehicles to get the range(energy density) they are looking for. Or just give us hydrogen powered combustion engines mainstream.
Until you can take one these EVs and hook up a 8k lb. trailer, load up the family and stuff, climb the "Purple Mountains Majesty" and not have to stop and recharge every fifty miles then they will be competitive. Until then it's just eye wash. Trips to Home Depot , Armstrong Gardening, or a close camping trip with just you and the dog. Ok flame on.
I fully realize this is a dead topic, but came across this listing on epay if you search for "xl hybrids conversion for sale" on google, you get to a guy who has 76 XL Fleet/ Hybrids conversion kits for sale that no longer have support from the company since they got out of the business. https://www.ebay.com/itm/22539393165...mis&media=COPY
I'd love to see somebody figure how how to modify/ adapt to older super duty's and excursions. Unfortunately I don't have $10k sitting around and time/ skills to figure it out. In my opinion this is the best of both worlds, Hybrid conversion and mostly leave your drivetrain fully intact with exception of driveshaft modifications.
Too bad those kits didn't mount before the transfer case so four wheel drive could work under electric power. There might be room along side the rear driveshaft to relocate the batteries instead of having to install them inside the bed. I've seen fully electric conversion kits that replace the engine but attach to the transmission so all of the rest of the drivetrain remains factory. If the technology were more developed and affordable, it would be tempting to try it but my next Excursion will likely get another Cummins 12 valve.
There is a guy who makes kits that go in front of the transfer case, in place of the transmission, so you retain both drive shafts and full 4 wheel drive capability, he did a F350 super duty that way, it mounts a tesla motor to the transfer cases input shaft.
