I got a Starband satellite dish which is a lot faster then dial up John. I'll check the links out JR. Thanks Guy's. I'll stick another Hard Drive in Tomorrow So the duel boot info is what I need first I think. I set it up as a primary slave don't I?
Linux will work on FAT32, but check the link below for better ones. That's more than enough partition size; a partition for Linux only is smaller than for Windows -- 2GB would do it, plus a swap file or partition.
I plan to format and reinstall on Monday. I will leave a 15 or 20 Gig Dos Fat 32 partition on it. Is this right for linux?
15 to 20 gigs is more than enough. But I would use cfdisk, it's built into the Linux distro you choose. The partition should be reiserfs, ext2 or ext3. There are many others to choose from. I like reiserfs for the better indexing capability. Your probably going to want to split that 15 or 20 gigs into smaller partitions. It will look something like this:
hda1: NTFS or Fat32 (Your windows partition-leave it alone)
hda2: This would be your root partition. Say you have 20 gigs for linux
I would make this like 8 or 9 gigs.
hda3: Swap partition (you have to set the type) it's #82 on the type menu.
You have to have a swap. Make the size of this double your ram
size. ex: If you have 512 meg ram than make it like 1 gig.
hda4: I usually make this "/usr/local" For now just use the rest of the HD
space for this partition. During install it should ask if you want to
set this partition. Just type "/usr/local"
I believe hda2 should be set as bootable. Save and exit. Then run setup.
If you have an instant messenger than give me a holler. I've walked many people through these setups.
I over worked myself yesterday cleaning the yard. So my hole body fells like I been hit with a truck. Other than that it's healing as exspected. SLOW. Thanks for the links Rex I'll check them out.
Mornin John. I printed your instrutions out and will use them as I learn more. Thanks. And know that I will be asking more questions. Just to give ya all an idea. I am running an Asus A8V deluxe board, AMD Athalon 64 at 3200+ and a Gig of ram. Only a 60 Gig drive so Using 10 Gig with two partitions for different Linux setups should work fine. I have blown 2 power supplys on this sys. A 500 Watt and a 550. Am now running a 680 Watt That has lasted the longest. We have brown power if ya know what I mean and I don't have a UPS as of yet.
Not a bad system at all Richard. Yeah, at first it can be a little confusing. I would suggest something like Ubuntu distro for you to start getting a feel for it. It's got alot of drivers and is an easy switchover from Windows. + it's free. Suse is a really good Distro but they sold out to MS so I don't touch their products. Red Hat is obviously a standard but I don't like RPM's so I stick with old school Slackware and compile my own proggy's from source. Probably not a good Distro for people new to Linux as they tried to keep it as close to Unix as possible. I personally can't use another distro besides Slack but then again I love to tweak code to suit my needs. Try looking at Ubuntu.
I'll do that John Thanks. Free is what I need as I've been off work for two years with med problems and no rocking chair as of yet. Heck I don't even have enough money to pay attention. HAAA I built my system from scratch. It's also got a Nvidia graphics card with 256 meg of ram. Built it mostly to run Flight Sim 2004. It smokes with no frame rate studder of any kind with every thing turned wide oped and hungry scenery downloads also.
Yeah. That's the only reason I keep Windows around is for playing games. Once I get the Xbox 360 I'll probably just use Linux all the time. Plus, all the students in my computer science department use it so we have to mesh up.
I hear ya about the rocking chair. I was riding the quarter horse yesterday and my dag-gone left stirrup broke off at a pretty fast gait. I hit the ground on my wrist and shoulder that's already got bursitis. Then my dog ran off later, I found him and chased him. Ended up slipping on a rotted piece of wood and twisted my knee. Unfortunately that was the same leg I smashed in a high-speed mortorcyle accident a few years ago so I'm a gimp. Then I was in so much pain I got angry and hit the fence a few times so now my hands are busted. It was alot easier to heal at 18.

And I spent the rest of the day trying to do further damage by poking at all the various sore places - it was great!
Well I hope emmy will let ya heal before ya all come up. Cuz ya are gonna need it all to bring a couple of 2 hundred pound Halibut and a dozen large and lively silvers aboard every day.

Oh, the current stuff will be healed by then but I'm sure I'll find new things to injure. For some one so small I pose a pretty big threat!
