At any rate, I will not sell Vista on any of my new system builds. I will also avoid selling it for as long as possible. My only concern is what to do when I cant get system builder licenses for XP anymore. Trying to teach a customer Linux seems like a less than ideal situation.
And therein lies a problem. Although certain distros GUI's are becoming more user friendly, the drivers for the hardware are still not out there. Most programmers go to school for years to make alot of money, not write Open Source code and scrape to get by. I think that's why companies like Suse have partnered with Microsoft. Not so sure on that situation yet.
I've been building and repairing pcs for over 10 years, and I've yet to have an os run as well as Vista right out of the box. 15 minutes online getting drivers for some of the odd ball hardware I have and it's been as smooth as a baby's butt ever since. I mean it hasn't even crashed on it's own. It has crashed once, but that was MY fault.
You know, I didn't have any problems per say besides the use of resources on my machine. Perhaps I didn't give it a chance to tweak it right. It just didn't feel comfortable for some reason. I did like the 3D windows you can do with (alt + tab) is it? I spend most of my time making Slackware as small as possible but not as to make me limited. But then again I'm more comfortable in the terminal/shell.
pfogle, it's good to know that many have success with Vista; Windows BBS forum has hundreds of happy users. And there are hundreds of others that post with a wide variety of problems. The linked PC World articles did a decent synopsis of the pluses and minuses. It's a lot like when XP first came out, a lot of problems that went away with time.
Anyhoo, in 2009 Windows XP will begin its "Extended Support" period lasting another 5 years until 2014. So us remaining XP users will be good until then at least for security updates. If SP3 ever comes out, which is looking doubtful, it's even better.
BTW, ignore my avatar it's temporary for another thread. I'm gonna' fry John's a$$!
Basically all the article said was that there were a few "hardware support issues".. I'm willing to bet that there aren't even stable drivers for XP for the hardware they were trying to use. I get a few "This software may or may not work with this operating system" messages, mainly with Nero 6, but it works anyway. Just change the compatibility mode to XP SP2 and it works fine. I think all the issues I've had with software were cured with that little click of a mouse.
HAHAHAHA! I was gonna post about the shame of XP security updates ending. But that da*mn John. Always starting things he can't finish. Like working on trucks!
Then you're not seeing the same things we are. I'm glad you're having success. Here's a sample of other users, there's other forums with the same problems asking for cures. Many of the probs are normal newb stuff, many are from an unfinished OS release that was overburdened with frills and flem, imo: http://www.windowsbbs.com/forumdisplay.php?f=54

Welcome to the WinBBS board, pfogle. Nice to see you there, you've made suggestions in 6 of the ~300 posts with issues in their Vista section. Even the Admin and MS MVP's there say don't upgrade if Win XP is doing the job you need.
Your sig here lists an E150 (RIP). Does that mean it died and you're out of Fords? I've got an old F250 for sale cheap, if you want to clean the heads/valves of massive carbon buildup.
My mind is going....no it's gone! I meant to start this thread in the Washington Chapter, grrr. So I'll "report" myself and get this outta' the general non-auto conversation section.
Could a MOD please move this thread to the Washington Chapter? thanks...
Rex
Edit: I see what it was, the devil made me do it, post number 666.

Hang on Rex.....You did have it in the WA Chapter....It was moved here by a MOD.....Not sure why, as I thought it was for us WA guys & Gals.....
Most of the threads were on issues dealing with driver conflicts. Thanks for the welcome as well. I had some of those issues before I updated everything though. MS has done a great job with vista's updates. They will often times have an updated driver listed in the automatic updates before I can find it on the website.

Whew! Thought I was losing my mind (don't say nuttin'!) Thanks JR

Ok, leave it here, you're right our 'puters are global...I'm just surprised shocked and awed that a Mod moved it from the WA chapter without posting something in the thread about doing it. Why for?
Anyhoo... here we are.
"To Vista or not to Vista, that is the..." always generates a lot of comments pro & con. For those venturing there, there are many forums and articles about the best hardware and versions. Here's a recent one with updates: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,13.../article.html# and many more...
Edit: Hi again pfogle, your welcome and we like all the expertise we can get
