cold blooded at startup

Hi guys I spend most of my time on the diesel forums but I now need some of your advice and guidance.I have read the other thread but with my codes being different I started a new one. I am working on a friends 88 with the 2.9 manual tranny it has been sitting for at least a year because of a starting problem and brakes. The first problem was the ignition switch was falling apart thats fixed ,fresh plugs, wires, cap and rotor, oil & filter, and five gals of fresh gas. Unless I pump the pedal at least once it will just spin over no fire . I pump the pedal she will lite right up go to about 1300-1400 rpms drop to less than a 1000 and die in less than 20 sec. it will start right back up and on the third try stay running roughly till it warms up. Fuel pressure is 30 to 40 psi KOEO 67 ac on , KOER 11 pass , code 53 throttle pos sensor voltage too high. When this 2.9 is warmed up she purrs, mileage on this engine is unknown. Any ideas ? What would cause too high a voltage at the tps ?

If you're getting a 53, I would suspect that the TPS is going bad. This is also symptomatic of a dirty or bad IAC, faulty MAP sensor, the list goes on and on. You can check the TPS wiring harness connection as well as the TPS itself (I believe there is info in the tech section (read first)). If in fact the TPS is bad, and replacement doesn't help, re-scan the codes and see what comes up from there. Did you run the scan(s) with the A/C running??? Wonder if that might have thrown something off as well.

On a 2.9, KOEO 67 is almost always a result of performing the KOEO test with the transmission in gear (the computer expects to see it in neutral).

If that 53 was a CM code, the first thing I would probably do would be to clear CM, start the engine (or attempt to start), and then see if the CM 53 comes back.

"list goes on and on"

Man, you got that right !!!
I'm not yet finished with my list.

When it's all said and done, I'm going to put it all in chapters
and have it published

The scan was run with the ac off and the tranny in neutral I cleared the codes three times and got them back.

a/c blower fan and pushbutton off? if so, there is a problem with the a/c signal to the computer... which could be affecting the tps signal, or vice versa. sounds like it's going to be interesting... might have to trace out all the underhood / underdash wiring to see what's up....

Yes the a/c blower fan is off and the pushbutton is off. I haven't even checked to see if the a/c is working could a faulty pressure switch cause this code with the a/c off?I didn't want to spend the money for tps just to throw parts at it I'm not like that ,thank you for your ideas I will see what I come up with.

These two wiring diagrams might be worth looking at to check things out:

Could be a faulty relay or pressure switch, sending a bad signal back to the computer as well as affecting the TPS, but the TPS could still be bad. You'll want to check the TPS out with a meter, I believe the procedure is in the "Read First"/Tech section on the forum. Hope this helps narrow it down.

Fuel Filter, Press. Reg. Harness, OR Pressure Regulator?

I would suggest that you change the Fuel Filter. It only costs a few dollars. If that doesn't fix the problem then I would get a voltmeter, unplug the Fuel Pressure Regulator Connection, turn the key on and see what kind of readings you get on the "Connector", If the voltage is incorrect "Back Probe" the Connector. If the voltage is then correct replace the Connector. If not you may have a problem either at the connection at the EEC(Computer) or the EEC itself. If it's O.K. then check for continuity in the regulator. If there's continuity then plug the connector back into the Regulator, turn the key on, and Back Probe the connector and see what the voltage is. If it's not correct, replace the Regulator.
Hope this helps!

Fenix2,

We were talking about the Air Conditioning circuits affects on this problem. The fuel pressure regulator doesn't even have an electrical connection, and he is getting plenty of fuel pressure to the system.
