Power loss

I have an '89 ranger with the 2.9 v6. When iI first get going it has plenty of power, but as the engine worms up it starts to loose power, a LOT of power.
It had a cracked head and had them both replaced plus all the gaskets. That helped but did not fix the problem.

It does have a couple collapsed lifters, could that have anything to do with the power loss? I am stumped......

Have you pulled the codes? That will give you a good place to start. Have you done any diagnostic tests of any kind? Why do you say it has a couple collapsed lifters?

Can't see the collapsed lifters having that big of an impact, but it will affect oil reaching your upper valve train. Is it noise, or what makes you think that there collapsed?

When the engine's cold, she runs rich to make up for running cold like the old manual and thermostatic chokes used to do. If the computer doesn't know that the engine has warmed, it won't adjust, and a warm engine running that rich, can lack power. Check your temp sender. I think there's 2. One for the computer, one for the guage. Just an idea.

You may want to have a compresion check done as well, with having a cracked head and collapsed lifters, I'm just a little concerned about the over all health of the engine, also is the timming correct?

I have not pulled any codes yet, thats a great place to start, i should have thought of that. I was told by the guy that replaced the heads that the lifters were collapsed, and they are very noise. They get louder as the engine warms up. I will also get a compression test done. Thanks for the idea's.

It's probably a restricted catalytic converter. Coolant will kill these almost instantly. Try removing your oxygen sensors (to open up the exhaust) and see if you notice a huge power increase. If so this is definitely your problem!

Good luck

Seeing as how things seem ok after a cold start & get worse as the engne warms & the O2 sensors are supposed to warm up & come on line, I'd maybe suspect the O2 sensors have gone belly up, as it doesn't take much of a whiff of coolant to take em out!!!

So have their response time tested & let us know what you find.

It pains me to see that the fella that replaced your heads didn't pull and replace the collapsed lifters while it was in the shop. Were you in a hurry to get the truck back? A call from him with the option would have been nice IMO. Pawpaw seems to be on the right track I beleive, and you can run the engine with the O2 sensor suggested while your at it as MazdaRangerguy suggeste to check for a plugged converter.

He didn't tell me they were collapsed until after he had put everything back together and i was picking it up. Believe me I was not a happy camper and I wont be going back to that shop again. Then he wanted to charge me another $800 to take it all apart again to replace the lifters. I said no thanks, I'll be going some place else from now on.
