I am looking for a Code Puller for an '88 Bronco and am hoping that someone can steer me in the right direction. I have seen some in the auto parts stores for less than $150, and several others online. I was hoping to stay under $150.00, but definitely don't want to waste my money. Are there any in this price range that are decent and where could I find them?
If I remember right you don't (necessarily) need a code reader to pull those codes. It can be done by jumping a wire, or paper clip in the box. Then turn it on and read the number sequence (codes) of the flashing check engine. I have a complete list of diagnostic codes given to me by a Ford employee, but I have found several websites with the diagnostic codes. (I think we eventually picked up a cheap (under $20.00) reader from Pep Boys)
I am sure if I am wrong I will be/stand corrected...
Yes you can pull the codes with a paper clip or a piece of wire. I would not do it unless I had someone with me who knows how to do it. I wound up buying an inexpensive $30 by Actron. I think I bought it at AutoZone.
I finally wound up buying the "Scantool" from Actron and a cartridge for my 86. I spent a couple hundred, but it was worth it. I was way off on the codes I thought I was reading by the flashing light method. Now my 302 runs great.
