I have a '96 Eddie Bauer/5.8 ltr/automatic transmission/push-button hubs and transfer case/3.55 differential.
My concern is that most after market products are listed as up to and including '95 Bronco's. Is this a misprint in the advertising brochures or are the '96's different and special? Also, is this motor EFI or MAF?
That's because your motor is MAF. But MAF is still injected (EFI), what you meant to ask is if your motor is MAF or SD (speed density). SD uses a MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure), while you've got a Mass Air Flow meter just after your airbox. Your truck's also OBD-II, which was mandated by the feds in '96 on all vehicles. You've got approx 40 more pins running to your ECM (60 some on OBD-I vs 100 some on OBD-II), most if not all of them emissions related (remember, the feds wanted it LOL). OBD-II adds a 2nd O2 sensor also. In some ways it's sweet because it can produce more trouble codes, making it easier to diagnose problems, and you can more easily use laptop programs while driving to find problems and even change fuel or timing curves, etc (but I think this technology is now becoming avail for OBD-I EEC-IV systems, too; obviously I need to hang out on the EEC-tuner list more). On the other hand it just adds unnecessary (IMO) complication and many would argue that OBD-I is sufficient. SD rarely responds well to cam changes, better-flowing heads, etc, but MAF can. Clear as mud?
Thanks for this reply - I'm going to print it out and put in my notebook/workbook for my bronco to help keep me straight. It's stuff like this that make these boards so valuable to folks like me... you can't get help like this from your average FOMOCO service desk.
That comment on the laptop software stirred me up, now if I can finish the job off by convincing my darling wife that I really need one...
