Need help with front end

I have a 96 F-250 2wd ex cab long bed with 460 230,000 miles. Whenever I hit a bump over 3 or 4 inches my steering wheel shakes violently and it feels like the front wheel is coming off. Does anyone know what this problem is or what to look for? Could it be a bearing? I have kept everything well greased since I have owned the truck and I do know that the truck was wrecked at one time in the front end.

If ALL front suspension parts are good. Try adding a "Steering Dampner" it's pretty much a shock for the steering. That may be what you need.

something is lose and callusing that problem. but the only way to find out what is to jack it up and start wiggling wheels. it helps allot if you have someone that can wiggle while you are under looking. if there is any play in anything it needs to be replaced.

use jack stands so you will be able to tell us what you found

Sounds like a shifted belt in the tire.........air up the tires to full capacity, then with both hands , pass over the tire completely while feeling for anything irregular......cross rotate the tires and try again

It was usually ball joints...upper and lower when that happened to me.....230k....even keeping them greased they are going to wear out.
Raise a tire off the ground then use a bar under the tire to see if you have up and down wheel movement.......any at all is worn ball joints
Good Luck

I lifted the front end and found no up and down movement. Only left and right. It looks like the play is in between the pitman arm and tie rods. I guess with this many miles the entire front end should be gone thru. But that is something I have never done. Any ideas how much time and money and special tools I will need.

If you are going to rebuild, you might want to get a kit like this.
http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-...ng_rod_kit.htm

The only special tools you would need is a pickle fork used for seperating tie rod ends. Or maybe a pitman arm puller.

Thanks for the link. It looks like it will be cheaper than I expected. I guess a front end alignment after the rebuild would be necessary?
