higuya need some help, first; brakes or axles, i had my rearend rebuilt about 8mos ago, since then i have lifted [4"] and done a complete brake job all around. the problem is about a month later i started hearing a popping noise, like the brakes are catching, it's been driving me nuts. i've taken it apart three times everything is in the right place and seems to stop fine but sometimes when i start out again it makes a popping noise then once i get going its fine. last time i took it apart i noticed quite a bit of play in and out on the axle shaft 3/16 is this normal ? i can't find any reference to axle shaft play in my manual i'm thinking it may be moving in and out enough to bind the brakes but isee no evidence of it inside any suggestions? also recently when i start my truck somtimes it just dies then it seems ok , and other times after decelerating it will die and when i crank it it fires right back up. a friend of mine had a car that did the same thing and a mechanic told him to unplug the compter for half an hour and it reset itself has anyone tried this or should i be looking at some sesor someplace ? sorry i know this was long. the truck is a 90 302 w efi and rabs
Don't unplug the computer. What the mechanic was referring to was to disconnect the battery. That will clear all the codes and "learned" settings for the computer. It would drive a little funny until it relearned your vehicles settings. I would suggest reading the codes from the computer. You can get a code reader. Acton makes one that goes for about $30. There is a way to use a paper clip and make your engine light flash the codes.
What kind of popping noise? Did it start happening after the lift kit was installed or after the brake job? Are your u-joints binding/need lube or a rebuild.
thanks for reply, this all kind of happened at once. i had the rearend rebuilt and changed the gears , i then installed the lift kit and had to extend the brake lines. since i had to bleed the whole system i decided to just rebuild/replace everything as it looked like it needed it. i started hearing a popping noise like the brakes were binding that only happens at low speed sometimes, after i accelerate it stops. i originally asked if there should be any play [inand out] in the axle if some one happens to have their truck in the air please let me know. my fear is that i thought i did something wrong w/the brakes and all along the axle play is the culprit, binding the brakes intermitantly, and hopefully not eating themselves in the process. when you say the truck has to learn how to run, shouldn't resetting it take it back to factory like it's supposed to be ?
i reread your reply and did'nt answer all your questions i had the driveshaft rebuilt and both axles replaced, the noise is definatly coming from the drums themselves, and like i said it goes away when i speed up and their isn't any sign of exessive wear on the pads.
