I found a 6.9L engine in the local paper today, its an 83, do i buy it, they are asking 350 bucks for a complete engine, I have been told to stay away from these engines but i really want to rebuild one so, the question is, to buy or not to buy?
if your going to rebuild, BUY BUY BUY! can be one hell of an engine if put together right and taken care of. just put a banks or ATS turbo on it when you get it all rebuilt and you won't be disapointed. I wish I had the Time, and money to rebuild mine but I have neither at the moment so yah. 350 bucks is an ok price too, I'd do it if I were you!
thought the problem was on the early 7.3's? or is it both?
Early 6.9 blocks are known for cracking around the block heater area (Dave S can tell you which block #'s don't have this problem). Known for glow plug controller malfunction (glow plugs turning on randomly during driving) but can be fixed with a manual switch. Head gasket issues (go head studs if you go turbo). Air leak around factory filter. Probably missing a few things but I'm sure others will jump in here...
As far as I know the main problem with the 7.3's is cavitation.
yah I knew about the 7.3's, didnt know about the 6.9's. I havent had any glow plug issues, and my heads arent leaking oil or anything YET. my engine was built in august of 83, truck in November. How owuld you know if the block is cracked by the block heater area?

Not everyone encounters all of those issues I posted, its just a compilation from what others have posted from their experience. As for your question...if its cracked, then obviously its cracked
I take it it will pour out oil like cray huh, it drips a little bit off the oil pan, thinking its a rear main seal. I think shes going into the shop next week sometime and hopefully when I get back from California she will be all fixed and running. What all should be replaced when shes in the shop? Im thinking gaskets, IP and injetors(if needed), also the rear main seal. Anything else I should have looked at?
The weak area is the block over the block heater.
When you use the block heater the high heat in just that area can cause it to crack.
If it were cracked you would lose coolant, not oil.
I am out of town, so I do not have any of my notes with me.
PLC7.3 can give you block numbers.
The late 85, 86 and 87 blocks are thicker over the block heater and do not have this potential problem.
The only things I can remember off the top of my head are a counterbored area for the block heater and a defined place for the oil dip stick are signs the block is a later casting.
Oh I guess that is why I don't see any of these problems, trucks lived in TX most of its life and if you need a block heater down here for more than one or two days outta the year you got some serious glowplug issues. Only time I used mine was when all of my g-plugs were bad, only used it for about 3 days though.
